P covers Archie Bell on Leno

Did anyone else notice the huge chunk of "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells they did (from the drum break onward)?

If that's "make me wanna holla, make me sing", that's a line from Return Of The Bump Squad - I found myself singing this line to this song too - very similar groove (I've also found myself singing words from Sex Me, Sex Me Not and 2045: Radical Man over the Musicology groove in the last few days, since Tavis' clip was so short)

Oh, snap! I just gave a shout to this song on the non Prince forum!

Yep! How cool was that!? It was my favorite part of the performance. Good call, Prince! The lil' pimp!

Maybe I should listen to Musicology first but that part reminds me a line from Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues":

Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life

Good point. I think this is where Return Of The Bump Squad takes this line from anyway, especially since it's sung by Nona Gaye.

The song also quotes The Girl Can't Help It and other songs, so I think this was a deliberate homage.

I noticed that too. Man, I love "Tighten Up". It is one of my favorites of all time. That song turned me on to a lot of the stax stuff as well as the Atlantic stuff from the 60s and early 70s. Being a child of the late 70s and 80s, I have really come 2 appreciate artists like Brooke Benton, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Tyrone Davis, The Soul Children, The Emotions (pre-Best of My Love), The Dramatics, etc.
