Yeah I thought Prince was rippin on him too..

I thought he was letting him know that he MADE A MOVIE! Not anything from The Bible.

Just a Movie..

I agree.. if Mel is acting like he is sooooo worried about being correct and putting in a Language no one has heard or speaks anymore.. you would think he would look in that same Bible and read Jesus WASN'T WHITE!

soooo we know how Prince argues by making a joke lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

In the interview with Leno, Mel Gibson said he tried to include many of the imagery of the paintings done in the middle ages. This should tell you something right there.

I dont think he outright said anything insulting, but he treated Mel to a little sarcasm and awkward humour, perhaps at his expense

Why do I think this? Well..

When P danced over to the stage, he plopped down into his seat cutting right past Mel not greeting him with a handshake or anything.

Later when Jay referred to Mel, Prince was pretty condescending to him. In mock awe, he exclaimed "Mel Gibson, whats shakin' bro? Hey what you doin after the show?"
to which a confused Mel said "I dont know, dancing I guess"
"Wanna, uh, maybe catch a movie?"

It wasnt very funny but it was pretty sarcastic.

It could mean 1 of two things i think
1 he was expressing his disagreement with the movie...hey this is a total assumption
2. he could sarcastically be referring to the treatment Mel has been getting in the press.

What do y'all think?

He then tried to sort of slap his hand, the back of his hand whern it rested on the couch, and when Mel responded, Prince was already facing the other way!

I thought the song was OK but the performance kicked ass! his outfit, the moves, the dancing, and his overall good mood were amazing. Band was tight.

To be honest, Musicology sounded very bland, by the book funk. Sorry, I wasnt very moved, but it wasnt bad

Wow, people will always have different intepretations of the same thing. I guess it makes the world go round.

Also, further along in the interview, when he talked about making real music - he acknowledged Mel - I took that as saying we make real music like he made a real movie. No following the formula for either of them.

I'm not sure exactly where this interpretation would stem from, based on what I saw:

1. After dancing, before he sat down, Prince slapped Jay's hand (didn't shake it), and then slapped/grabbed Mel's as well. So I guess he was also "dissing" Jay.

2. I didn't detect "mock awe" in Prince's tone. More like, "Hey, Mel, you just made an extremely serious movie about my Lord and Saviour that features Aramaic dialogue with sparse subtitles and it made 26 million dollars on it's first day. That's pretty cool." cool

3. He didn't actually "slap" his hand, rather he grabbed it and HELD it for a moment. That's a little different. And he wasn't "already facing the other way" when Mel responded.

4. Then, at the conclusion af the interview, he again acknowledged Gibson and shook his hand. When Jay said, "I'd like to thank Mel Gibson...", Prince pointed to Mel in order to direct the applause and cheers towards Mel.

On a final note, I'd be willing to bet you that Prince actually has respect for Mel's artistic courage, rather than having any animosity at all. There are obvious parallels between what Mel has done and what Prince has been talking about regarding artistic freedom.

There is no reason at all to think that Prince was expressing displeasure with Mel or his movie, and to try and create this impression is more than a toatal assumption -- it's simply ridiculous.

Now, I realize that you were just posing the question. The real interesting thing will be to read the responses.

Thank you for your voice of reason. I agree with all the points you made.

I didn't see any "dissing" of Mel by Prince, and I honestly can't understand how anyone could reach to that conclusion.

I saw Prince as being very respectful and a bit playful with Mel and didn't detect any sarcasm whatsoever.

I'm gonna go along with you guys and say that Prince didn't diss Mel and was in fact pretty nice and respectful to him. I have said it once and I'll say it again. I love Prince to death, but just because you are in religion now don't go snubbing your nose and looking down on people and trying to send them straight to hell, because whenever you get through with it, you the so-called holy person is probably taking your ass to hell too. I don't think Prince would like it if people was disrespecting him and constantly throwing up his past and I'm not talking just about the sexual stuff, but cheating employees out of money and songwriting credits and really I think the latter I just mentioned hasn't changed about him. Plus we're not around Prince 24/7, not even his wife. Who's to say he's still not screwing around with other women and then tryin' to put on a front like he is so saved from all that now. I personally don't like the religion, if someone is a JW fine, but don't think that's the ultimate denomination that gets you a ticket to heaven. We all have a judgement day for everything we have done in our lives and Mel Gibson felt like he had to tell a story and I have no desire to see the movie, but I don't have a problem with it. As far as the violence or anything else it ain't no worse than The Sopranos, Sex in the City, Queer as Folk, Oz, or even alot of primetime shows. If you can deal with that, you can deal with The Passion of the Christ.

Now some folks have tried to say that Prince would take issue with Mel over the subject matter of the film, since it clashes with his JW beliefs. I don't think this is so at all. Prince was a huge fan of kevin Smith's "Dogma", which contained MANY things that don't jive with JW doctrine. I think P repects when an artist is addressing these kind of issues, even if they aren't 100% in line with his own.

I agree with this.

I do think that Mel Gibson looked like he was shitting himself though.

Very good point Caped Crusader....I thought that Prince's comment was awkward and didnt work.

If he was dissin Mel at least as an artist Prince could respect him 4 Mel's dedication and independence in getting his movie made. Isn't that what Prince is always talkin about.

I believe that Prince should have been a lil more respectful and welcoming of Mel....it wasn't funny.

But Mel what's shakin baby was!

I agree wholeheartedly, I think he was trying to lighten the mood because you can tell this ordeal has deeply affected Mel.

I didnt say he was mean to him, im just saying Prince has a way of making fun of people, but hes not particularily funny. he's awkward. since mel was already jumpy/defensive/hopped up, he didnt quite get it and it made for some awkwardness.

but i guess since you guys know him so well, my point is moot.

ive never gotten into his head like you did tonight.

as for not understanding how i could come to that conclusion, i made my points. you just disagree with them..we have different sets of eyes, thats how we got the two different impressions.

sorry lets all go back to stating which album is better than the others. cuz we all know thats based on facts.

my apologies.

Hey....no need to apologize. You were just expressing an opinion, like all of us do. I don't think he was dissing Mel, but I do agree with what you said about the akwardness after Prince's statements....on the part of Mel. He didn't look too comfortable around Prince. Me, personally, I thought he was being playful, but from the look on Mel's face, he might have taken it the wrong way.

Ok. You on some other shit, now. How did the topic get from Prince dissing Mel Gibson to Prince looking down his nose at people and cheating on his wife? Sounds to me like YOU'RE on a judging trip yourself. I'm so sick of everybody jumping all over Prince for being born again - JW or not, I don't know for sure, don't really care. Instead of those who claim to be fans being happy for him deepening his relationship with God, they DIS him!! But then you want to get your nose out of joint when he supposedly "disses" somebody else. And by the way, nobody knows who's going to hell except....

Fellow Fans,

I'm surprised you've all missed the obvious. What is Prince's biggest insecurity-- his height. At his age he is still obviously obessed with it. That's why he said down right away and "dissed" Jay. He didn't want the camera to show his shortness when compared to tall man like Leno. Notice the way he sat way forward on the seat so that the camera wouldn't show the proportional scale between him and Mel/Leno?

I don't think he was rude to Mel at all. I think he genuinely wanted to see his movie. I thought he said, ".... want to check out the movie." I wouldn't be surprised if his people asked Mel's people to have him slide over so they couldn't put them in a two-shot together for the same reason of scale.

Further proof:
1. He wears high heels
2. The Letterman "Dolphin" performance when he did that fainting thing before Letterman could shake his hand.
3. Rave video concert with Lenny. He never stood right next to him.

Prince has directed movies and videos, he knows that without scale his dimunitive stature can't be recognized.

I just looked at the tape again and everyone was right he didnt diss Mel and I'm glad for that.

I am glad Prince got himself together with God, I didn't say that, even though I'm still not crazy about the JW religion, but the shit I was on and not just Prince, but this is to anyone in GENERAL. Don't get in a religion and try to look down on everybody else that's sinning like you didn't do everything under the sun and now that you're saved you're better than everybody now. You wouldn't like it if people kept bringing up your past and all the shit you did, so don't judge if you don't want to be judge. "Let him who has not sinned cast the first stone" I didn't say nothin bout sending people to heaven or hell I already know that is up to GOD that's what I just said. People judge and then they get judged. I love Prince, but even the people you love there is going to be something about them you won't like.

The part where I said you probably going to hell with them just meant that don't you have a judgement day with GOD and there are people and you know it that think they got their stuff together so tight and they know they are going to heaven and you are damned for hell because you ain't going to church every Sunday or you're not with the right denomination. I just wanted to make one last comment. Like I said I am happy for Prince getting his life together with the Lord, but I don't want him to be like that I don't like it when others are.
