I attended the taping of this, and just got back! It wrapped up around 6:00pm.

Prince performed "Musicology", with a full band (including Candy Dulfer and Maceo). The first performance was awesome! At one point, dollar bills flew out of the keyboard area (which coincided with a lyric about money). He had the Telecaster, which you really didn't hear much of. It was mostly horns that you could hear. The live version blows the video version away -- much more spontaneous and jammin'. Just a fun track with a little musical message, to look back at how music made us feel when we were younger . . .

There supposedly was a problem with the recording, so after the hour taping had finished, we were told to stay in our seats because Prince was going to perform Musicology AGAIN. The second time was cool too.

Prince came on stage and talked for a few minutes, talking about the new album and joking with Jay and Mel Gibson. Prince asked Mel "what are you doing tonight?" and Mel replied "I guess I'm going dancing!" That was funny. Then Prince asked Mel if he wanted to watch a movie . . . (a reference to the Passion).

He was wearing a mustardy gold suit and hat (the hat he never wore, it was just a prop). He had white boots (which had red lights in the heels as a prank to Jay Leno). The rest of the outfit was a white collared shirt and a white handkerchief. The coat that Prince was wearing had 2-levels (kinda like Two-face from Batman). On one side it was long, like a trenchcoat, and on the other it was short, like a normal suit. It looked COOL! And only he could pull it off.

Prince looked like he was in GREAT form, ready to do this whole "publicity" thing right this time. He talked about Musicology (putting the Music before the Ology) and performing this tour in-the-round. There was also a reference by Jay earlier in the night about all performances being live (and that Britney does NOT perform live). It was funny.

After the original hour, and before the 2nd performance of Musicology, they taped "promos". Prince, Jay, and Mel taped about 4 promos, messing a few up. Sorta like bloopers made on purpose, just to see which one was funniest. Jay was saying "tune in to see 2 well-dressed guys AND Mel Gibson". I thought that was funny, because Mel was wearing black faded jeans and slip-on black loafer-type shoes with white socks. He seemed underdressed next to Prince!

I got in the backstage line to get tickets at around 6:00am (the doors opened at 8:00). My girlfriend and I got the last 2 tickets, and were ecstatic! We asked the guy when would be a good time to get in line, and he said "right now". That was 8:00am, and the taping started at 4:30pm. We took turns for food and rest breaks.

I could not have asked for a better day . . Prince and Mel Gibson, free tickets, a souvenir (coffee mug) and a bonus second performance of Musicology. Very cool day with awesome memories.

The Mel Gibson parts were cool too, just heavy. There were a few fun parts, but Mel was obviously uncomfortable. Not with Jay, but just with his movie and critics. He seemed like he has aged alot in the past year, dealing with this movie. He was laughing though at some of the jokes (like the photographer of the Passion who kept getting struck by lightning -- TRUE!)

If anyone was in line with me, I'm the guy from Detroit visiting San Diego.

HE did good.
The song is great - not awe-inspiring - but catchy and very funky.
Hopefully it will get some decent airplay.
He talked about the concert with Leno - and said, "bring the kids to the show" so they can experience what REAL music is all about. Never thought I'd ever hear THAT from Prince.

that song is so much better live.

that performance was classic. skin tight. he really should emerge as the best talent to come out of the 80s with all of this good publicity.

I'm here in Chicago and I just watched the performace on TV and I thought it was awesome! And when Mel didn't get the joke about him and Prince going to see a "movie"... that was pretty funny. DUH, MEL! But I loved P's performace and I'm real excited about seeing him in concert! Should be a GREAT show!

If I wasn't a fan of the song "Musicology", well, I am now. Very cool performance, slick and funky! I'm now looking forward to the new album- everytime I doubt that Prince still has it, he writes a new 3 minute pop/funk tune which eases my fears.

I just hope the energy of that song in a performance setting isn't lost in the studio version.

The Kid was in RARE form tonight.

That song's won me over.

It's funky, fun, catchy, and it even has a chorus too. Really good song.

... the thought ocurred to me when hearing MUSICOLOGY, how Prince debuted it as several COMPUTER SAMPLES on his website, and I found it ironic to hear him talking about reintroducing the MUSIC before the OLOGY stuff.

But very cool performance, and I loved that he came over to the couch and actually talked with Jay for a minute or three -- cool stuff!

o-tay, the show's gone off:

-- the suit he had on was nice...but that asymmetrically cut jacket he had on annoyed the hell outta me! lol weird i know, but it's a small pet peeve of mine (made me wanna reach into the teevee screen and straighten it out) and yes i do know he meant for the shit to look like that...

-- i was crackin up when he was chattin a bit with mel gibson..."what's shakin?" and all that...falloff

-- as for the performance itself...what was up with that money poofin outta somewhere? lol

...and last but not least...he had the hohner. s'all that matters outta all that chit, is the hohner. worship

now i'm goin to bed. 'nite, ya'll! grouphug

i thought that black and white strobe effect was annoying. when i have replayed it, i have to look away for a while. i wondered if that is where they had to cover up some editing.

and old boy needs to speak up a little bit. he really is a low talker.

Yeah that effect was annoying...you'd think Prince requested to edit the damn thing himself!

As for the low talking...you KNOw he had alot of energy but he went into "deep, serious crptic" mode!

I can't wait for the tour. These performances have been great. It was fun to hear the Prince fans get loud. Mel did seem to have some ants in the pants. It was funny to Prince joke around with him. Love the coat and the band.
He's definately aged better than Madonna.
Gut feeling is I don't see the 'Musicology' single ripping up the charts.

That effect was placed at such a crummy time, but I think it was to emphasize the "old school" theme of the song. Crap thing about it though was Prince was throwin down a lil dance bit there and they slowed it down...Ijits!
I'm firmly planted in denial
