Musicology (the title track)

On a scale of 1-10, rate the song's:

a) mainstream "hit" potential
b) overall quality

I have to give it a 2 on both counts. It just kinda... sucks. Very dissapointing.

a)6/10

It has no catchy chorus, which is just a huge detriment. If it had a good chorus, I'd rate it another point higher. Either way, it's not a great mainstream song like Cream, but it's funky, fun, and it grows on you.

b)7/10

It's a good, catchy song with a funky vibe to it. Nothing great, but it grows on me the more I hear it. Once I hear the full version I might like it more.

I think the Public is ready for Prince, but I don't think this is a "hit".

the lack of a catcy hook is one of the things keeping this song from being a hit . . . also i think it has to do with the lack of layers and changes. he used to go sooooo far with each song - give us something to dive into . . but now it all seems like it just there, on the surface . . . no surprises. very good musicianship throughout, undeniebly - but just not cutting edge anymore . . . sad

First of all I would like to state that we have only heard a small part of the song (less than 2 minutes). For all we know it might have a great catchy chorus that would enlarge the hit potential of this track. But based on what I have heard until now these are my opinions:

1) I would say 6,5 out of 10. That could become 7,5 out of 10 if it turns out that the song has a great chorus. Of course heavy rotation on TV and radio stations would be needed for the song to become a huge hit. Without the backing of a major this will not happen.

2) Although certainly not his most inventive song, I do like the groove of this track. Man, I have liked that James Brown type of funk since I was a little kiddie, and this is certainly a tight JB style groove! So I give it 8 out of 10 for its groovability.
I enjoy "Musicology", but I don't think it is a very special Prince track. Maybe a tight chorus and/ or bridge could make this a killer track after all, I don't know. Anyway, give me this type of groove anyday over most of the top 40 crap!
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
