Song, Good Love, who's Gustaf?

Hey, could somebody help me out a little....in the song Good Love there's a reference in there a couple times over about "Gustaf mahla(sp?) # 3 jamming on the box" For years I always assmed (for whatever reason) it was a bit of classical music. Anyone clue me in? thanks

Yeah, you're right. Gustav Mahler was a Czech composer that died in the early 1900s. He composed like ten symphonies. He was also a famous conductor.

He was Austrian, and he completed 9 symphonies. (His tenth symphony was unfinished - as I recall it only had a sketch of the first movement and was 'completed' by Derek Cooke.

I have a CD somewhere that has Gustav Mahler #3 on it. I'll see if I can dig it out and rip the song. I was so curious back then to hear the track that I bought a classical CD of his to check it out. Prince can be so random! But he did get me listen to some other music lol

P.S. - Amazon has some samples of #3 you can listen to:

Mahler's symphonies are major classical works: his most well-known is probably Symphony No 5, its popularity partly due to the Adagietto (4th movement) which was used in the opening scenes of Visconti's film of 'Death In Venice'. It's as good a starting point as any.

Of the symphonies, the third isn't that often performed (relative to some of the others) - it's in six movements and the fifth movement uses a choir.

Mahler's various song suites (piano and voice) are also worth exploring if you enjoy that style of music, although they often pursue rather sombre themes.
