I guess I can't be very objective about the album, because this cd (or rather the concert) was what got me into Prince. I went to see him in Ghent on December 28th, 1998, a friend dragged me to this concert. I didn't know this album, I didn't know the man, except for some hits I liked a lot. At first, I didn't want to spend so much money on the guy, I was like 'he's a bit weird and stuff', but that same night I was so glad I did, already during the first notes (this is the jam of the year...). I bought the album the same week. Now I have almost all of his cd's, and I must say that NPS is not in my top 5, but I like 'Come on' and 'The one' a lot, especially its dreamy, somewhat eastern atmosphere...
By the way, if someone still has the playlist of my first Princenight, would you be so kind to post it or send me an orgnote... I was so amazed that nowadays I don't remember the songs he played... (by the way, that night I met the first real love of my life...)

I don't think NewPowerSoul is crap at all. It is rather good. It suffers from some really bad "guest appearances" though. Bad contributions from Dougie Fresh and Larry Graham make certain tracks a hard listen, but I like the album as a whole. A great party album.

I didn't like it at first, but I listened to it a lot travelling on coach journeys and really got into it. Personally I like the upbeat party tracks 'Push It Up' and 'Freaks on This Side' which has a fantastic deep synthesizer bass beat, but the ballad-y songs are also good and well produced. I like how 'New Power Soul' (the track) namechecks all the other song titles on the album - much like 'Push' does on D&P. So it has party songs (Freaks.., Push It Up, I Like Funky Music), romantic songs (The One, When U Love Somebody) personal songs (Until U're in My Arms, Wasted Kisses) funky jams (Mad Sex, Come On) and, errr, Shoo-be-doo. What more do you want from an album? Well, the only thing missing is some rock guitar, it's definately a slow-funk-groove album. Not his best work, but it's not that bad. This is Prince's deep funk album. It will not appeal to less mature listeners as it is not from their era - a dynamic which is true with many of his more recent releases. I like to call it "grown folks music". It is not commercial radio format fluff. It is not programmed computer sounds. It is real horns and instruments in extended pieces that are geared toward dance/party music. NPS is not a "deep funk" album by any stretch of the imagination. It only contains two tracks that really fall into the funk genre anyway ("Mad Sex" and "Come On"). The album is full of fluff and filler. To imply that listeners who dislike this album are not "mature" is just silly. To me, this album hardly reflects his abilites as a musician, and is far more likely to appeal to youngsters for its lack of anything even remotely challenging on it. I respect your opinion, but: Larry Graham, aside from one line reading in "Push it Up"- you wouldn't even KNOW he contributed to the cd at ALL if you didn't read the booklet credits!I don't think that's a fair critisism. "A Great Party Album"- to me that's code for a mindless album made for the heck of it, because, what party have you ever been at that cried out for "Newpower Soul"? I played "Newpower Soul" for months in my car in 1998. Everyone who heard it in the car insulted it as if they smelled something offensive. I think you have to be a real Prince fan/completeist to even acknowledge this cd in 2004. Cheers!

I love "NEWPOWERSOUL". It is dark, weird, and mixes alot of real instruments with plenty of electronic wizardry that only P knows how to do. Highlights for me are: the harp being beautifully plucked alongside a background of soft strings and the stark bubbling funk of Rhondas bass on "The One" and P's electronically distorted vocals creeping through the fiery horn blasts courtesy of the Hornheadz on "Freaks on This Side". Great album, and despite what anyone says,IMHO, one of P's most creative. "this is where the PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE be"

The only song I like from the whole thing is Come On. But I like that song so much, that I think the album is worth it. Mad Sex and Freaks On This Side are awful. New Power Soul (the title track) is the same music as Big Fun from Exodus, but Exodus has energy, whereas NPS enthusiasm has dust bunnies all over it. And Push It Up has horrible backing vocals. Who are the females on this one anyway? Ugh. Almost as bad as the backing vocal from We Gets Up. I'll never forgive P for that one. "She made me glad to be a man"

Why are so many people into The One?? The lyrics are so lame it isn't even funny. The album isn't THAT bad though. Worst tracks.....Shoobedooop or whatever its called, The One, and Push It Up. The rest are just fine. Most atrists today would be happy with one good track on their CD. This one has a handful All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. Simple answer.
No, it is not that bad at all. In fact there are some really good songs on it. These are the best: New Power Soul Mad Sex Until U're In My Arms When U Love Somebody Shoo Bed Doo Come On The One Freaks On This Side Wasted Kisses. Really, only Push It Up and Funky Music are the duds. But oh what duds they are! . [This message was edited Wed Feb 25 17:56:43 2004 by mrdespues]

NEW POWER SOUL IS A BOMB!
A VERY BIG FUN PARTY ALBUM, MORE THAN THE BLACK ALBUM. A MASTERPIECE OF FUNK, MORE THAN GOLD EXP! IT'S SOUNDS LIKE SLY & THE FAMILY STONE/PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC CLASSICS. MY FAV TRACKS ARE: NEW POWER SOUL, FREAKS ON THIS SIDE, PUSH IT UP (AND WHAT 'BOUT LARRY'S RAP...), I LIKE FUNKY MUSIC, COME ON (WITH CAMILLE VOICE), WASTED KISSES.

Is it worth buying? People hate on this CD 2 much. "When U Love Somebody" is slammin. It has a nice funky workout with horns 2 te 4. It has a cool 80's feel "The One" that song is very tight and the orchestra is cool. "Funky Music" is cool 2 me, It has Camille vocals like on "Come On". "Wasted Kisses" is very eerie and personal. it is cool2 listen 2. "Mad Sex" is sub-par but it is funky. "Until UrIn My Arms Again" is commercial prince trying at a single almost like "Silly Game" and "Man O War". It is about his son i hear. Go get it. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

"Gold" is banal and trite - the music, the lyrics, the glossy production - just horrible. The words to "Dolphin" are like bad high-school poetry that you wrote when you were 13 and are embarrassed to read again when you're 30. Dolphin is a song i can relate 2. itts all good man..... different strokes 4 different folks www.riotcitywrestling.com
