Three amazing songs: The One, Come On and the 'secret' track, Wasted Kisses.

The rest is utter sh*t. I mean it, really sub-standard.

Worth it for the good tracks though.

It's not that bad...there's a fair amount of solid songs on there.

The One, Come On, and Wasted Kisses are the only real standouts but i've always thought the album was alot better than what alot of people make out.

In short...yes it's worth buying. thumbs up!

No, it isn't bad at all...I quite love it as a whole. Gold Experience is crap by comparison.
The production has a real cool dark & sulfurous vibe...me likes it a lot.

Anxiety

My local wrecka stow has several used copies of NPS for 3.99. If I were you, I wouldn't pay a penny more. There are maybe three or four good songs on here, but in my opinion the bad songs are really, really BAD.

Your opinion and everything, but...WHAT THE FUCK?

TGE is amazing imo, it's pure brilliance.

I think the production really helps it.

It feels like you're really listening to musical, well, gold.

Prince's cheesiest album. But, there are a few gems here and there: "Until You're In My Arms Again" and "Mad Sex" are tolerable. The bad ones are really poor, though.

Decent songs that would've fared better under better production. I'd like to see P do some of these live with his current band.

But, Dougie Fresh? barf

I agree. The Gold Experience is completely over-rated. "Gold" is banal and trite - the music, the lyrics, the glossy production - just horrible. The words to "Dolphin" are like bad high-school poetry that you wrote when you were 13 and are embarrassed to read again when you're 30. "Eye Hate U" is boring and meanders around without one decent hook... The album version of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" ruins my enjoyment of the single version. "Shy" and "We March" are just filler.

OVERALL, Newpower Soul is the better album because its not trying to be something that its not. Its just a fun party album like The Black Album. Yes, some of the individual songs are a little weak, but taken as a whole, its more enjoyable than the turgid, Prince-by-numbers of The Gold Experience.

And anyway - any album with a "Camille" vocal on at least one track makes it automatically better than any of the other shit he was peddling in the 90s.

I even like the cover.

Like virtually all Prince albums, it seems one person's favourite is another person's most hated track!

I didn't like it at first, but I listened to it a lot travelling on coach journeys and really got into it. Personally I like the upbeat party tracks 'Push It Up' and 'Freaks on This Side' which has a fantastic deep synthesizer bass beat, but the ballad-y songs are also good and well produced. I like how 'New Power Soul' (the track) namechecks all the other song titles on the album - much like 'Push' does on D&P.

So it has party songs (Freaks.., Push It Up, I Like Funky Music), romantic songs (The One, When U Love Somebody) personal songs (Until U're in My Arms, Wasted Kisses) funky jams (Mad Sex, Come On) and, errr, Shoo-be-doo. What more do you want from an album? Well, the only thing missing is some rock guitar, it's definately a slow-funk-groove album.

Not his best work, but it's not that bad.

WHy must people call the music shit? Shouldnt this be snipped? I have expressed opinions in here WITHOUT the profanity and had them snipped based on some bylaws of the site. Isnt it equally as offesive to have the work referred to in vulgar terms?

This is Prince's deep funk album. It will not appeal to less mature listeners as it is not from their era - a dynamic which is true with many of his more recent releases. I like to call it "grown folks music". It is not commercial radio format fluff. It is not programmed computer sounds. It is real horns and instruments in extended pieces that are geared toward dance/party music.

ooh, you don't like wasted kisses. i happen to think that this is one of prince's best songs ever. worth getting that album just for that song alone. like someone else said about those three tracks. they are really good. the rest are substandard i guess. mad sex is alright. push it up is corny but good background music. good music to listen to while doing house work and chores and shit.
