Musicology - Prince is back!

Now that's what I call a leadoff single - so much better than his last attempt at a mainstream hit (the greatest romance) - and a cool video to boot.

MUSICOLOGY IS OK, BUT SORRY TO HAVE TO SAY THAT IT IS TOTALLY UNITERESTING, LIFELESS, AND EVEN A LITTLE BORING. IT HAS NO CHANCE TO BE PLAYED IN HEAVY ROTATION ON THE RADIO.

ALL THAT COME BACK REALLY SOUNDS LIKE RAVE PT2, UNLESS SOME REAL HITS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY SOMEONE ELSE (LET'S FACE IT, EVEN THOUGH PRINCE REMAINS AN AMAZING COMPOSER AND MUSICIAN, HE IS COMPLETELY WASHED UP AS A PRODUCER...LAGGING ABOUT 10 YEARS BEHIND EVERYONE IN USING NEW MACHINES TO PRODUCE NEW SOUNDS...IRONIC FOR SOMEONE WHO USED TO BE FAMOUS FOR SETTING SOUND TRENDS....)

A NEPTUNES REMIX WOULD BE MORE THAN WELCOME, THERE MUST BE ONE TO KEEP THAT SONG AFLOAT....

Musicology sucks. Another song about Prince sulking about the music industry and about how the way things used to be. And some people accuse his fans of being stuck in the past. What happened to singing about love and life?...

Someone else pointed out that those samples on NPGMC were actually from this song. No joke, it sounds like the whole song was built from those 3 or 4 samples and nothing else.

I'm surprised you guys like it so much. I liked the song a long - it's got a good message and cool instrumentation, but I'm not sure it's a hit. There's no catchy chorus, which is typical of most hits these days. Plus the video is fun, but not outstanding (like a Britney Spears or whatever video would have to be). I'm not sure this is a good lead-off single choice. (but I've been wrong before)

I would have thought that being totally uninteresting, lifeless and boring would make it ideal for heavy rotation on radio. ( ain't that right, beyonce? wink )

fuck making hits, prince needs to stop that as he evidently cant anymore, and he shouldnt waste time at this stage in his career chasing the TRL audience. hes not suited to that audience so he should stop trying to get their attention. he should just concentrate on making good, solid, songs, sorta like dylan on love and theft and time out of mind. fuck charts and the hits, make a good album.

i really hope this isnt another attempt at a mainstream hit - that really isnt princes forte anymore. im sad to see him STILL trying to make pop hits and look like a fool trying to do it. hes gonna end up looking like james brown in the 90s still trying to get on the charts. that time has passed, nothing wrong with it, thats what happens.

I like the song. It's not his best song but it doesn't suck and it surely isn't lifeless. Bring on Da Funk! It's the first single, let's see what comes next.

um, the video was a little boring, but it was good. Was the little kid in the video suppose to be him? Wendy looks much older than Prince, anyway, the interview was cool.

Well, I completely disagree. Properly promoted, this song gets prince back in the top 10 easy.

Prince is such an idiot. Here he is trying to make a comeback and his first single is a total piece of shit. People are gonna hear Musicology and be like "Damn, he used to be so good. What happened to the poor guy?" He just can't do it anymore at all. He may as well hang it up and spend the rest of his career playing blues clubs and shit. He's definitely not making new fans with this. He should get advise from Madonna, Aerosmith, Rush, U2, and any other artist or group who has been able to keep up with the game. I would rather he produced one awesome album every 5 years instead of lots of garbage. He's letting his age fuck things up, and it's not necessary.

I will bet any amount of money it doesn't, even with great promotion. The song is terrible, plain and simple.

nod Those of you wanting Prince to dominate the top of the Billboard charts again, it ain't gonna happen. I'm pretty sure Prince knows that. However, he probably wants to sell more than 150,000 copies of an album this year. It probably won't blow anybody away but Musicology is a nice little slice of funk and it's nice to hear him getting back to basics again and showing the public he can still do his thing.

sad i guess some people just don't know good music when you hear it. I saw the show and i thought Musicology was an excelllent song. my sister is not a fan of Prince but when she heard the song, she called me and couldn't believe it was Prince. When he releases the album she wants to buy it. This will be her first Prince album and she is 55 years old. lol MUSICOLOGY ROCKS

i find it disturbing to read your views on the man, really, think about it, how can he make everyone happy ????? its never gonna happen, cant you just respect his music for what it is ????? cant you just appreciate what he has done for you in the last 20 years ???? i mean damn, really, chill out, let the man play, if it aint your thing, FINE. look past yourself, and see his work for what it is---- SOMETHING YOU COULD NEVER DO !!!!!
i will take it all back as soon as one of you proves to us that you can maintain a music career for over 20 years, come up with new, exciting music that every single person loves, and keep it up to date, fresh, and on the radio everyday rolleyes some people really have no clue sigh

It's a good song, not a great single IMO, but good. Reminiscent of The Work, but better. It's got a funky hook that's still going through my head, but it didn't whoop my ass. confused

It's a nice little song, but nothing groundbreaking or especially interesting. I'll take it though and I'll enjoy listening to it when the new album comes out.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This song will definitely appeal to that music industry ever-important 50-70 year-old demographic!

True, that nobody under 50 will listen to it, but who cares, it is the 50-70 year-old crowd that he needs to appeal to if he wants to chart again. People under 50 simply do not buy CDs, so it doesn't matter what they think. biggrin

I loved "Musicology" and have probably replayed it 15 times at this point. But what I'm really excited about is the album!

"Reflection" (which I'm assuming is going to be included) and "Musicology" sound like the opening salvo of a soon-to-be classic Prince set.

I think "Reflection" features the man's best lyrics in some time — using a simple-on-the-surface stream of consciousness framework Prince deftly comments on the past (especially the notion that you can't go home again: "Turn the stereo back down / ain't nothing worse than an old worn out love song") and the death of his mom ("Still it's nice to know / that when bodies wear out we can get another / what does that one thing have to do with the other one / I don't know, I was just thinking bout my mother"). BEAUTIFUL!

And like I said, "Musicology" is stuck in my head in a major way. I just keep rewinding and rewinding and rewinding... It's his best attempt at crafting a "mainstream" song for ages, I think.

Peace, David
