Larry Graham How do some of you feel about Larry Graham's contribution to Prince's music? Do you think that Prince grew musically or what really took place with his art.

Larry was poison to Prince. Unfortunately I don't think there's an antidote. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

We're not pissed at Larry cuz he's a JW. We're pissed that he got his claws into Prince's mind and influenced him the way he did. Prince gave Larry way too much stage time and with song rewrites like "The Christ", how can you not be pissed about that? "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

I think that Larry brought a bit of spirituality that was more than a lot of people wanted to hear from Prince and it did bring about a different vibe. However you want to interpret that vibe is totally up to the listener.

Take a healthy approach and look at it as another weird turn in Prince's career. Besides there's nothing we can do about it. Actually, those of us who liked TRC should thank Larry.

Every artist loves too be comfortable. Well, everybody wants to be.
Larry Graham made Prince feel comfortable. More than that, he is one of his mentors. Not hard to understand why Prince so badly wanted to get together with him and create music. Wether we like that or not, it is really his decision. Anybody ever heard of Alice Coltrane? Yoko Ono? There`s so many examples. Larry Graham is a living legend, an innovator, a virtuoso. My personal opinion is that i can`t relate to JW. But that`s SO out of the question here. Yes i think he did help Prince with a lot of things, their collaboration was off the hook. I`m going to listen now to the fabulous Rotterdam gig from 1998. The entire Ahoy Arena is screaming "Larry Graham". Aaah, beautiful memories. Let me tell you something else. Music is like the display of colours of the rainbow. Once you mastered the colours themselves, it`s all about getting a fresh interesting mixture. The man Prince has shown me everything(every colour) so far. And so much more than that. He really doesn`t have to play one more song for me. I heard all the stuff. This way of thinking helps me a lot personnaly. You should all try that. If he quits the industry, that`s allright with me. If he`s going to do performnces like the one on the Tavis Smiley Show, i can only say: Thank you, Prince. Dear influence, you influenced me, and i thank you. Let a man be a man. Everything that is is on its way somewhere. Let Larry Graham be on his way somewhere. Peace.

Lol. I guess i like you, but you have to try harder. Create your own
emoticons for example. Like Larry created a new way of playing the electric bass. YOu think you can do that? I`d love to see that.

Dude, normally i get paid for this, but i`ll make an exception for you. Larry Graham in fact did invent the slap bass. We`re talking about electric bass here. But Milt Hinton and Slam Stewart did that decades before him, but that was acoustic. Damn, i am a drummer, not a bassplayer. Anyway, get yourself a Sly Stone cd, if you don`t have any. I am sure "There`s a riot going on" oor "Fresh" will enlighten your thoughts. Have fun.

I love Larry Graham. L k at it this way, without Larry, Prince may have continued to flounder singing about the same old stuff, graphically, and desperately. There's something unseemly about a middle aged man singing about Pussy Control, or "rivers of blood/u must have been a virgin"- it was time for a fresh direction. PLUS: Artists in any medium go through rough patches-it wasn't Larry who caused Prince to put together less interesting beats, notes, riffs, samples. That was Prince. It happens.

You know, if I made this kind of comment about Wendy, a moderator would send me one of those lame messeges and delete my post. Think about it, real fans. [This message was edited Tue Feb 24 18:22:54 2004 by NPGLOVER] ...cause FACE said so!!!

I think the original question was what impact Larry had on Prince's artistic growth.
I don't see much of an impact. I think that Prince went through a period of being high on the opportunity to collaborate with Larry and maybe took it too far with his live sets. Too much Larry air time and too many covers of old Sly tunes started to wear thin, especially when you go to a concert primed to hear you favorite Prince music, old or new. Larry seemed to enter at a time that Prince's live sets got a bit stale. Fans wanted to hear new Prince music or at least older tunes that hadn't been done in concert very often, but instead we got I Wanna Take You Higher and Everyday People. Again. And again. And yet again. But as far as the recorded music, I don't hear Larry's infulence in the music itself. You can argue about how much impact Mr. Graham had on Prince's spiritual directions, but TRC sounds like Prince -- not Larry Lite. Prince's style has always been a gumbo of all the music and influences he comes across. If Larry was an influence, that sound has been baked in since the beginning and hasn't sounded to me like a new revelation. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

Larry Graham is a Great Bass player. He plays Slappin Bass very Ferociously. I loved him with Sly,loved him on his own and enjoyed him with Prince. I find him a very nice individual as also his wife Tina . It is pretty Horrible that he get's Attacked because of his faith and because Prince Stopped Cursing. I think Prince is a Grown Man and he became Bored and wanted to Change. I don't Think Larry was to Blame for this Change. Prince Matured.
