What's wrong with the Gold Experience?

Why do so many of you guys hate on the Gold Experience? What specifically do you not like about it? In my opinion it was Prince's last great album.

Nowt's wrong with the Gold Experience, except We March. Which is real dull, and it's still a mystery as to why he included this at the expense of, say, DOW. Didn't he say he thought DOW just didn't work in the album or something?

Compared to most of Prince's 90's albums, I thought it was pretty good, with the exception of We March and Gold.

WE MARCH is pretty lame. As are the annoying segues... Every time he tries to make an explicit concept record (SYMBOL, GOLD, TRC) those parts always get in the way of the songs. But other than that I LOVE TGE. ENDORPHIN MACHINE and SHHH RULE!! cool

Nothing. It's one of his best 90's albums. Not dragged down with religion.

sorry but im my opionon and Herb4 "dolphin" isn't a great song, in my opinion the worse song on the album, i love the lyrics, and the musical side 2 it, but the chorus and these lyrics put me off" if i came bak as a doplhin would u listen 2 me then" no because i wouldn;t understand what u would be saying!!

but that is our opinions and u have 2 just accept that

I thought Gold was an excellent title track and the guitar solo is one of his most passionate, in my opinion.

Nothing's wrong with it, it's a fantastic album.

Great production, amazing guitar throughout, and altogether some of his most memorable, inspired songs of the 90's.

There's not a song on it I don't enjoy, but I love many of them.

I think TGE is his best album of the 90's and it is in my top 5 Prince albums of all time. While 'We March' may not be a great song I certainly think it is a very good one and the segues don't bother me at all. I do agree that 'Dolphin' is pretty weak though, at least lyrically.

I couldn't have put it better myself!

The whole album is overblown, too polished and lyrically weak.

The good tracks are:

P. Control
Shhh
Billy Jack Bitch
Now

Everything else is rather mediocre. As a whole, the album is either way too frantic or excrutiatingly meandering. There is no middle-ground... "Gold" is as banal and twee as "Graffiti Bridge". Its just songwriting by numbers.

I don't really like it. Here's why:

P Control is cool -- the first couple times you hear it, but once you "get" the story, it doesn't bear constant repeating. There's nothing particulary interesting about it musically.

Endorphine Machine -- sounds contrived. Rather repetitive, too.

Shhh -- I've enjoyed this more as a live cut. It just doesn't grab me much.

We March -- Yawn. And why would we teach the babies "replications" of the act? Is he saying he wants us to teach them how to work at Kinko's? Or did he really mean "repercussions" of the act? Nothing makes me cringe more than someone using a word and not knowing what it means.

TMBGIIW -- Never liked it and was shocked that it did so well. When Prince wants to be schmaltzy, he can certainly out do himself! I usually love his falsetto, but it sounds too yelp-y on this cut.

Dolphin -- More MOR pop drivel. Go tell Flipper all about it.

Now -- OK, I like this cut! It's funky and silly, good for cranking up real loud and annoying the neighbors.

319 -- OK, I like this one, too!

Shy -- Nice mellow groove. A bit on the experimental side as well, which I like.

Billy Jack Bitch -- This is great!!! Those horns at the end are sooo tight and funky! Wheee!!!!

Eye Hate U -- It tries to be a classic Prince slow jam, but, again, I just don't feel it.

Gold -- Awful. Purple Rain was a great rock anthem. Gold tries very hard to be and that's the problem -- it tries. Way too hard. I don't believe that even Prince is really feeling this one, it just sounds like he's trying to put up a good front.

OK, now that I've examined all the songs, I find that it's not quite as bad as I thought. I'm gonna have to pull it out and give it another spin for the sake of the better cuts. But overall, it's a dry album with a 4/12 songs that make it worth keeping in the collection.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I don't like it. It's overproduced and stale.

I like everything he's done after TGE much better than TGE, except for newpowersoul and rave, obviously.
TRC is the record which convinced me Prince can be great again (and I didn't think he could in 95).

From 89 to 95 Prince was really fucking with himself by trying too hard to be successful, but he was doing it for Warner not for himself. So all his records tried to sound like his old ones. But since it's impossible for an artist in his 40s to be as brilliant as he was in his 20s, he's done the right thing to leave it all behind. I hope he doesn't start again now.

I think you're BANG ON!

"Overproduced": It DOES sound like "aural laquer" was poured over it: it's a little too pristine sounding

"Stale": there is NOTHING that sounds unlike anything that had been done before, and arguably better

"Trying too hard to be successful": that was the mindset up until TRC.I think "Musiclolgy" will be a very curious listen.

1) That album cover was quite poor. And title.

2) "I Hate U" kind of unravels for a bit with the "ass sheet"/Peoples Court oddity;

3) "We March": should have been left off altogether, perhaps?

4) The segues: "Prince is "somewatho"! "Prince is "somewatho"! : what?

5) This version of TMBGITW is even glossier than the radio version! Why?

6) Why begin "Now" by reminding us of BETTER "Then" songs in the segue?

7) "Shy" is not a nice story. What's the point?

8) "Gold" is pure corn until the guitar blasts at the end.

Rialb: it's not that "TGE" is a bad album. People who praise it aren't crazy. The 8 points above cross my mind sometimes when I put on this cd. "Come", with it's lesser tracks, filler, and less sunny outlook, was somehow a more compelling cd. My opinion.

TGE is neither as bad or as good as most people seem to think.

on the - side :

- it IS overproduced -- it sounds "cold" like some Revolution tracks, but with bombast and much artifice and certainly not half the charm.
- the segues.
- déjà vu
- a poor excuse for a concept album -- there's not the faintest depth to it, plus didn't Rick James had a terrible so called concept album called Gold?

On the + side :

- it does have a pretty good number of top notch Prince songs : Shh, TMGITW, 319, I hate U, Shy, Billy Jack Bitch... Even songs like P. Control, Endorphine Machine and Gold have had surprising fans round this here house.
- It does show Prince making one his most serious effort to reclaim some of the edge he lost.
- His many talents are evident in nearly every song in a way they had not been in a couple of years.

I guess it's a matter of taste...

I like:

Dolphin
Endorphin Machine
Shy
Shhhh...

I can't stand:

Pussy Control
319
We March
Now

These songs represent the worst of the '90s 2 me personally.

He did a much better job at Urban Contemporary with "Come" and, YES, "New Power Soul". I still can't figure out why peeps hate on NPS so much around here...

All this coming from an old school Prince head and a Funk freak... Gold just didn't move me, except 4 the songs that kicked...
No one here should doubt "Dolphin"... Great music, important message to WB.

Peace,

G.

In the segue you're talking about, the Operator is saying "Prince esta muerto" which, in Spanish means "Prince Is Dead". I actually like the segues on this album, I just wish he would've kept the promise of "over 500 experiences to choose from". I was excited at the time of an outpouring of music. That didn't happen.

Aside from that, I love this album. "We March" isn't so bad, but knowing that other tracks were left off this album -- Interactive, DOW, Ripopgodazippa, Acknowledge Me -- you have to ask WTF??!!!! Delete The March, add those 4 tracks . . perfect album IMO.

The cover art is poor -- when the CD came out, I was just finishing up design school, and I cringed when I saw the cover! That cover looks like someone was trying to save some $$$.
