The whole swearing thing is not that simple really.

Some folks miss the swearing when it is taken out of a song. Not necessarilly because it adds so much to the song, but it's a jolt to hear something they expect to hear edited out. Seems strangely blasphemous.

Others miss the nasty, raunchy Prince of the past for whom the ocasional profanity was part of the persona. Personally, it not that big a deal to me either way, but that's just me.

it's not that we want him to swear, we want him to stop butchering his older work.
i mjean why even bother? for example, would changing the word 'motherfucker' as in 'sexy motherfucker' from mother fucker into 'mutherducker' really change the entire spirit of the song????!! please.

i know he says his songs are works in progress and it's true a song is never 'finished'. but
imo he should stick to creating 'new' stuff that reflects his current views. it's all right whatever he does. i'll keep the old version of his songs and forgetabout the 'New Translations'

I really don't care if Prince curses or not. He doesn't have to in order to make Great music. It is just the fact that the songs sound rather Odd when the lyrics are changed. I wouldn't want him to ever regress though and I love his new music.

Like other folks have said here, it isn't about him swearing or not. It's about re-writing the racy parts of older songs for his "beliefs for this week".

The proof is in the pudding.....

Days Of Wild"...and if a woman ever said I did, she's a motherfucking liar and I'm a set-up kid" becomes ".....and if a woman ever said I did, she's a big old liar and I'm a set-up kid" no no no!

Peach"...here she comes, dressed in red, get her done, it's always in my head, her hot pants can't hide her cheeks, she's a peach" becomes ".....here she comes, dressed in red, shaking her hips, shaking her head, the bibles the only book she read, she's a peach" no no no! no no no!

The Truth".....the choice u make it ain't no piece of cake, it ain't no motherfucking piece of pie" becomes ".....the choice u make it ain't no piece of cake, it sho' gonna be your piece of pie"

If it ain't broke - it don't need fixing.

As the person who created the music, I think he has every right to change the content of his work as he sees fit.

As the people who buy and listen to his music, we of course have every right to disregard any "revised" material he might try to bring our way.

My biggest issue with his "revisions" to lyrics is that he could be a little more imaginative about it. We all know he's a fantastic lyricist - he can do much better than "...when her thingies bounced...". rolleyes

Calm down. We're not the only people who bought the albums back then. He had a lot of fans in the 80's who jumped ship around 1988. Those fans just wanted dirty, sexy Prince. So we are here, where are they? Just like the hard right that Prince took after Purple Rain to get rid of all the people that a newscrew would ask "why are you a Prince fan?"....and they'd answer "because he's cute" Oh shut the fuck up. If that's the only reason you like Prince then start walking. I think Prince made it very CLEAR how he felt about "us" his fans, if you missed it, go back and watch it again.

it aint necessarily about the swearing
its just the general idea of prince "dirtiness"
take Peach for example, he's basically ruined it
there are no swearing in that song, but he still changed it
its that mentallity of it all being "racy" as he said
he says it aint cool no more
he's wrong
prince has lost his freak
he aint a freak no more
thats whats missing
...just another manic monday...

I can't speak for everyone else but I get so tired of getting lumped together with other folks. There is nothing wrong with waxing nostalgia and it's okay for him everytime he wants to dip in the past and do old songs. What does that say about him? Prince never ever has to swear again for me. I don't care. All I care about is MY perception that Prince isn't as funky as he used to be and obviously other epople agree with me.

You just know he's restraining himself on stage, you can't tell me if he sang Sexy MF or Head on stage now that he wouldn't feel like singing the original lyrics, if that's the case, wouldn't that be him just lying to himself?. So what is it? he swears on stage and the Witnesses tell him off or kick him out?

Mind control in action. Terribly sad. sigh

yeah i totally agree you can see it in his performances recently and his mannerisms. (although he still kicks ass) Tailoring your songs/persona to fit in with your religion is absolute bollocks. I mean " You sexy old motha hubbard" just doesnt cut it! Im 100% against editing and censoring songs, and being sexy and a bit rude is what Prince is all about for me.
Kick that shit to the kerb P, now!.

ps.... i remember thinking years back, yeah its all cool cos he,ll never start doin cover versions then ooops! Emancipation. "More Let Down than Face Down"

i dont care if he swears or not. i just feel like the people who have to watch the edited version of great movies on network tv because they dont have cable. if the original sucks then dont sing it otherwise...leave the great alone! all i want is for prince to lighten up some. there is nothing wrong with being a religious person, as a point of fact he always was religious. God didn't seem to have a problem with his music back then, why should god have a problem now? if you believe that way (in god and god's power) then it was god who gave him the talent to be great in the first place. god who said get their attention use all i gave you and be great. and he is. who did he change for? not god. god made him and loved him just the way he was.

I have no problem with Prince not swearing, or changing some of the lyrics when he performs
songs live now (as long as he uses a bit of imagination and style). However I would have a
problem with it if he re-mastered his old albums and edited that sorta thing out.

I want him to swear, because otherwise he's being a hypocrite!

He knows what the intent behind the line in a song is, even if he replaces a cuss word;

He knows that he could just cough if he wanted to and the audience will just sing the swear words anyway;

He knows that he's partly responsible for the introduction of the PMRC and every warning sticker on every risque album has been a "Buy Me, Buy Me, Buy Me" sign to the average adolescent, ever since.

If he really felt that strongly, he just wouldn't sing the songs in the first place!

My jaw dropped a little when he said that the words to "Darling Nikki" aren't as racy as the lyrics in some music these days. Just because it doesn't have any swearing in it, doesn't mean that it isn't dirty.

I mean, "damn" used to be classified as being swearing... They're just words. Its the intent behind the words that matters and he's making himself look silly by changing his lyrics.

It's his right to change the stuff, but my opinion is it sounds corny, sort of like watching a richard pryor movie on network tv. Sort of ruins it for me. It's funny in a way though, "Sexy Motherducker" that is corny as hell, he may as well not even do it. He's always been surprisingly conservative though, I remember he was one of the first artists, maybe only one I can think of who had no problems with putting the advisory labels on his albums. He's really always had a strange contradictory puritanism in him. I mean how could he tell wendy and lisa they were gonna 'rot in hell' for their lifestyles while he screwed everything that moved and dressed like a transvestite? It's cool though, it's what draws us to Prince, those quirks and contradictions tell us more about ourselves than him.
