Personally, one of my biggest thrills is getting a new Prince LP on Vinyl. I love rushing home, cracking open the plastic, dusting off the record, and getting acquainted with the new music. The Rainbow Children on vinyl is *fantastic*. It came with a full-sized lyric book. Nothing beats vinyl, IMO.

Personnally i used to buy the CD and the first lead single. I would come back home unwrap both and listen to the single first in CD quality in order to-let's say- increase the excitment (which is usually quite high!!) and then listen the begining of each song of the album and then listening to it....

i know this ritual might sound crazy but.... I'd like to do the same this time no more pre download. i'll buy the album on official release (or order it if it can be done) date along with the single and do this same old ritual. Old school's in guys!!!

it wont really matter wot others say in they'r threads / posts , as u still have the choice of judgeing the album by urself !, wink

ie; some1 on here could create a thread slating the new album , that doesnt mean u slate it 2 !!! u may create a thread of ur own saying its great " kno wot i mean", cheers.

I think what David means (and I agree with him on this) is that gone are the days of an album release being an 'experience' - the only way 2 come anywherenear close 2 that now is 2 avoid hearing any online wavs/mp3's whatever - and listen 2 it fresh, outta tha wrappa.

Here's hoping its somethin funky - not flunky!

Maybe that's what Musicology is all about. This old feeling of discovery reborn again in "modern times"!!! I feel that the distribution of this album will be more traditional because it is all about old school!

Who here hopes that the new CD will be a return to those wonderful days of buying a new Prince album? When you first heard about the tracklisting in the music press and wondered which song titles would be ballads and which would be uptempo (was that just me?). The purchase of the new single, which you'd play over and over again, desperate to listen to the album from which it came. Looking at that 'From the 4thcoming album...' notice over and over again, pondering over the new album's title and thinking about that delicious musical experience that you knew was imminently coming your way. That unbearable wait for the new album that made the final result far more sweeter. And as for that first viewing of all those copies of the new album on the shelves in the Wrecka Stow, which was usually your first glimpse of the cover art. Well, personally, that usually made me almost cream with excitement.

And that beautiful moment when you finally experienced that first listen...

I haven't heard 'Musicology' yet, but even if I'm disappointed with it (I was also disappointed with Gett Off when I first heard it), I know that the excitement of a new album will more than make up for it.

Even if this album is available as a download on the NPGMC before it's release, I'm going to try so hard not to download it. Not because of the expense of downloading it as well as buying the physical CD, but because I want, yet again, to feel that 'new album' experience that hasn't happened for waaaay too long.

I want that first playing of the physical CD to be a magical moment!

Regardless of how anybody's felt about Prince's output of the last ten years or so, I would imagine that most people here have felt a little spark, at the very least, that this is going to be a pretty exciting time to be a fan.
Or maybe it's just me..?

yet another reason why i think you're one of the baddest peeps on here biggrin all i've been saying for the past 2 weeks is that something feels different. i feel good about all of this that Prince is doing as of late...

Great, great, GREAT post! I thought it was just me who had these thoughts. There was nothing like waiting for a new album and then checking out the paper to see the tracks and then getting down to Our Price the day it came out. It was hell if you were at school or work and couldn't listen to it until you got home! I would get it out of my bag and read each track name and go "Ooooh!" and "Ahhhh!" and take the booklet out (incredibly carefully) and read the liner notes. Curiously, I didn't ever read the lyrics as I wanted to be surprised when I finally got home.

Then As I got home in the evening, I would grab a drink, run up to my room and lock the door. Pop the tape/record/CD in the player and turn it up about 75% volume. I would udually listen to the first 30 seconds to a minute of each track and then skip over to the next one, studying the track names as I done so. Then once I had done that, I would play the album in it's entirity, trying to remember the standout tracks. The one exception to my routine was TRC, which I decided I would listen to in one sitting, with no skip throughs. That was a good experience.

In my experience, the tracks that I am cold to initially are usually the ones that I end up loving in the long run. I think on my first listen to tracks such as Joy In Repetition, Crystal Ball and Starfish and Coffee I wasn't aware of the complexity of them.

If Musicology (album) is available for a free download via the NPGMC, I will not download it. I'm waiting for the full experience.

I miss going the store and picking up a new album by him. I remember buying two copies of SOTT when it came out, i wasn't going to, i'd initially bought just one but as i sat in Mcdonalds staring at the cover and sliding the two albums out and contemplating the lyrics to songs i wasn't familiar with yet, something struck me. That nice blue heart shaped sticker on the front cover just had to come off when i got home, just so i could see the cover in full.

There was no alternative but to buy another copy, so i did. When i got home it was like a military operation trying to get that sticker off the cover without ripping it, but i did. Of course i finally got to hear the songs, rather than read the lyrics. I must have played that album non- stop from 10am to about 8pm that day. Fantastic. big grin

I still have both copies, one mint, the other more than just a little worn out.

I for 1 am quite excited about the prospect of a new Prince album in the fact that it will be interesting to see what direction he takes. Could it be along a similar vein as The Rainbow Children? or maybe A Rave Un2 The Yoy Fantastic MarK II if Prince has rekindled a taste for working with other artists after the recent Grammy performance with Beyonce Knowles. I for 1 hope for neither of those outcomes, but for something fresh and completely original. Whatever is in store, its an exciting prospect.

yeah.... after i downloaded TRC, i kinda wished that i hadn't... because when i went to the record store and bought it and opened it up, the only excitement was the excitement of the packaging, because i'd already heard everything inside...

but i did get the feelings you're talking about with "RAVE"... cause i bought the cd single to "the greatest romance" and it had that "from the 4thcoming cd" on it... and i couldn't sleep at night and shit waiting for that damn cd to come out...

and it may not have been one of the masterpieces, but coming after NPS, it sounded better than it actually was, because it was a noticeable improvement... to hear him screaming in the falsetto on the opening track... i was like "shit... we ready to rock this mutha now"...

so, yes... it would be cool to get that again... cool...

The worst part of downloading TRC was with an old 28K modem. Going to bed night after night, waking up each morning, and looking to see how much was downloaded before I was disconnected. The morings I got another song or two were great mornings. Other mornings it was back to what was downloaded the previous day or two. I think it took a couple of weeks before I heard the brilliant "Last December" completely for the first time.

lol These stories are just too funny!

I remember hating it when a release date was being delayed: after a very long wait at school you would go -all excited- to the record store (that told you before that the new album would be in on thursday), just to find out that the album didn't arrive "but would certainly come next monday". Hell, that really sucked, LOL!
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Being a non - home computer owner. I definately prefer to buy the CD in the shop. Seeing the promotional posters and trying to nick them or ask for them when they have finished with them.

Never liked the downloaded Albums and sooooo looking forward to some new material. Jazz or no Jazz influence.

Oh, you're just a hater! Your journey with Prince is over. Maybe it's time to leave and let the rest of us true fans carry on with our trip. Personally, I'm in this for life and I don't care what anybody else says. Maybe TRC didn't enlighten you like it did me, in fact it took me into the realm of Dungeons and Dragons!

Carry on living in the past and listen to your SOTT CDs LOL.

I still remember the days when I was six years old and first getting into Prince, and didn't have access to the internet, and heard no word of mouth about new albums - I just used to go into the store, pick up two or three CDs whose content I knew NOTHING about (first album I ever got was the Hits/B-Sides box set, after my brother played me Daddy Pop on his cassette player). Anyway, I remember I used to get real excited, get home, crawl up to my room, stick the CD in my discman, goe outside, lie down, stare up and the clouds and be funked. I did that with 1999, and was amazed, I must have listened to DMSR about 15 times in a row that day. I still crave for that feeling, but I know it'll never come again cause I hear about new album releases and I know so much about Prince now. Back then all I knew was that on these CDs that Prince had made was good music; I didn't know what year they were from, how popular they were or anything, but I loved everything on them. The first album I got told to buy from word of mouth was LoveSexy, and my bro told me to buy that and I remember I wasn't as impressed by the others as I was (of course, I am now), and the only song I truely enjoyed at that age was Lovesexy. I miss those days when there was an abundance of Prince albums still to get; I've got almost all of em now, and he isn't making more quick enough lol.
