Prince re-used the BatDance bass riff (tong, tong, tong!), transferred James Brown as possible and posed his LAZIEST funk ever since Rave and newPowerSoul!
What a dispair!
Sure that one will 'NEVER understand' Prince!
Prince, who makes such a 'title song' for the VERY awaited new album (what a pressure!). This Musicology is a completely unsignificant track: we are far from 'simplicity' of 'Kiss' and close to the OLD School funk that Prince does NOT master or control, since he really masters and control NEW FUNK! That's the truth (To this point, we truly overrated TRC, a pretty album but not a masterpiece).
Fortunately Prince is able to give to the masses pearls like 'Reflection', a true relief! But for this song, he's not alone, there's Wendy! Here I come…
If the next album and tour are done with The Revolution, the group will NEVER agree to play such a crappy song! The Revolution has not disappeared for 18 years to play THAT with Prince! Prince did his BEST material and marketing directions when he was SUROUNDED by 'good sens and good taste' people. When Prince is ALONE and play OLD SCHOOL FUNK… we can play the old Curtis Mayfield and JB tapes ON!

I agree. Reflection is great and touching, but Musicology is probably weaker then the Rave/NPS material. Mark my words this song does not have a chance in hell of being a hit although I am sure there are people on this site who will choose to blame whatever record company Prince signs with for it's failure.

The video was cool though but probably not cool enough for heavy rotation.

it is a weak commercial track, but its better than ALL of TRC imho
and as for the song Musicology, it's a average song and sounds like a remix version of The Work, execpt it sounds 2wice as good

I, honestly, don't find it very exciting..its okay. Too slow for my tastes, BUT I dig that bass line a bit and the drums aren't too bad. Lyrically it sounds too much like Return of the Bump Squad though. Its okay, but I wouldn't pick it as my first single. I kinda feel another RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC album coming out. He needs a REAL strong song, funky but HARD hitting. God, I sound like a PR guy

Regardless if any of you like the song or not, I think it's exactly what the radio needs right now. If it gets played it will do good because it's just so out of place being so raw and funky. If it's a hit, it will raise the bar of radio.

So true, sounds like he has the whole industry machine in on this one. If he allows the neptunes to do the remix, release it, and sends that mix to the radio stations, it will be a gigantic hit. If Prince would have released the neptunes remix to TGRES everyone would be talking a bit different about Rave. That and so far so pleased would have garnered Prince the comeback status he was looking for.
