To further add to what I just said - I just read on another thread

"This tour is in larger venues and has a "theater in the round" type of show that requires a lot of set up time. There will be no soundcheck access this tour."

than the ONA tour - further confirmation that Prince fully expects to make a commercial comeback with this album. I don't like the part about no soundcheck access - I really enjoyed that part of the ONA tour. But I like the rest of the statement. I had wondered about that when I heard he was playing the staples center. You don't book large venues if you don't expect large crowds - and you need a song on the radio to get the crowds in.

No matter what happens with the new album, it'll at the very least remind ppl that Prince is still making music.

Who knows, maybe if the album fails it'll help Prince learn what the audience does and doesn't want.

It's not like this is the last album he'll ever make.

I will say this!
Lately I have been very dissapointed in the music that prince has put out.
However, I was at the all day filming of the musicology video and was very
excited when I first heard the song. Most of the people that were in the video
were young also. Everyone loved it, and they weren't prince fans either. I have
not yet seen the video, but I do know this. Listen to it and judge for yourself!
Idiots like evil white boy obviously got kicked out of a prince concert or something
and has held a grudge ever since, because the song definitely doesn't suck!!!
But hey, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. It's pretty simple.
Welcome back Prince.

How can 10 year old music be considered old? Is Mozart's music old? Or Jimi's? Since we're talking about Prince, I don't think we should be judging his music with the same parameters we use for Britney or Madonna. Those are popstars, he's an artist. The cool sound of the day is not important in his case.
If he makes bad art let's say it, but let's not say his music is old because when talking about art it makes no sense. It makes sense if you're talking about fashion (and most pop music nowadays is just fashion).

broken record or an end to a decade of commercial suicide. Something big is in the works, we find out exactly what on Tuesday. Re-signing with WB makes the most sense.

One thing is certain, if he has the right promotion this time, he has a song that will get on the radio and video stations.

From the snippet I've heard the song is ok. It does not sound Sex Me, Sex Me Not and it does not sound like The Work. The little James Brown riff works and the little bit of the video showed is quite entertaining. The little kid trying to learn to play guitar and then using the upright Hoover as a mic stand is cute.

The song is not meant to be played along side and compared to the garbage put out by 50 cent and East Side boys or whatever hell their name is.

People are a trip. That Outcast song by Big Boi "The Way You Move" is a straight EW&F rip off. And I hear it every damn day, with and without Big Boi's rap.

If Musicology was the latest D'Angelo, Raphael Siddiq collaboration there wouldn't be an immediate howl of "it sucks". Goodness knows if Andre Benjamin put it out people would be falling over themselves trying to praise the thing.

If you don't like it fine. But all this other crap is so, so... childish.

It'd be nice if I could actually hear the damn song.

I dunno, I'll wait til my sister tells me what she thinks of it.

With each and every song, she's like the perfect test for what the average music listener will think of it.

Without even knowing what was a hit or not, she always happens to like the songs that were hits.

She loves 7 and TMBITW, but didn't like The Work or Face Down.

This was probably the best post of this thread - some people set the bar so high they'll never be happy, but at the same time, they'd rave if this were a song from a new artist and say something "why can't Prince make music like that anymore".

LOL! So true. I like what I heard but I want to hear the rest of the song. In fact, I was humming a little bit of the song earlier. Do I think it's a hit? I'm not sure but I remember when I heard a little bit if TMBGIW in 94 on the Miss USA pageant and I didn't think it would be a hit. We know what happened later that year. I won't rule it out yet.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

All I know is this song FUNKS HARD live...

After just hearing the video snippet it brings back the memories from the Oz aftershow which Prince opened with Musicology back in Oct last year in Melbourne.

The drum and bass line funks so hard...and each of those 'stops' in the middle of each chorus P just goes nuts smile

I remember the bridge being damn funky too...I think this song is a perfect vehicle for P paying homage lyrically to his inspirations and hopefully the clip will become much loved and played across all the usual platforms.

2004 thus far is as close to commercial as Prince has been in a long time...while still doing what he wants!

so much better than his last attempt at a mainstream hit (the greatest romance)

Why do ppl not like that song?

I thought Greatest Romance was a VERY good song that just suffered from poor marketing.

I tend to agree with Derek. This song rocks live. I think it's great to see Prince release a song that makes people think about how music was back in the day - and how music should be about that - THE MUSIC.

Musicology is not about living in the past as some of you think - it is about reflecting on the past while making room for the future.

It's part of his "lame and tame" collection. That's why it sucks.

This song grew on me a lot. But, it was a horrible choice for a lead-off single from Rave. That album was filled with so much mass-market cheese that would've served much better in giving the album some momentum. TGRES was just a ho-hum start. As silly as kicking oiff Emancipation with "Betcha By Golly" At least the MPLS 'urban' stations played the Eve-infused Remix of TGRES, but that was the only airplay I heard this song get.

I can't see Musicology getting any play on 'top 40' stations but he might not be aiming for those markets. I can see "urban" and "adult contemporary" latching on to this song a bit, though. And, the video is cute enough the VH1 and BET may give it some air-time.

Based on my few listens, it's a cute track. I will be shocked if it gains him "superstar" status but it may get him some exposure.

everyone is entitled to their personal opinion. "Prince is back"? the man never left. Is the fans that faded away. I have loved every era of Prince, for very different reasons. I love him for who his is. His talents, his creativity, his thoughts, etc. One of the reasons why i adore this man is because everytime i hear his music, i feel it from the tip of my toes to my head. I always get a very good sensation. No other artist has every been able to do this to me. His musical talent is so overwhelming, that I beleive if you are a true fan, you will learn to accept that his music comes from within. And he has changed dramatically during the years. He cant please everyone, but he can share what he is feeling through his music. So dont beat the man up, just appriciate that he still makes music and shares it with us biggrin

So you put the label "superstar" on Brittney and Ruben, but not on Prince? I think you need a better word there. If you're talking top 40 radio, Prince will be back this year.
