Tavis Smiley Show: I'm Impressed

The performance with Wendy was nice to see, but I was taken aback with the Musicology video clip. After hearing some of the remarks on here, I figured the song would simply be average. Instead, I heard a catchy and fun song, that I think has radio/video potential. A very good song that I certainly enjoyed. For those that have seen the show: What are your opinions?

this is what I just said on another post:

Yeah, I thought the performance was great too. His performance with Wendy leaves me with more questions than answers though. It makes me wonder if the two are or will be working on something together. Certainly, Prince could've had just about anyone accompany him for the one song performance, or in fact, he really probably didn't "need" anyone to accompany him... but then out of the blue comes Wendy of all people! I mean, where did she come from??? Personally, I think it's great to see the two of them together again, but it just makes me wonder exactly how that whole rendezvous came about. After all these years, I'm sure there is a story to tell about that. Wonder if Prince will dust off Roadhouse Garden and finally complete the project now??? Woud be interesting for sure.

Maybe I missed it, but why didn't anyone say before now that Musicology is based on the same samples that have been on NPGMC for nearly a year now. It's the same samples where fans could "mix" their own song. Maybe the live version sounds completely different or something... but I would've thought someone who's heard the song would picked up on that by now. Musicology definitely has potential to be very radio friendly song. On top of that, the video seems to be very nicely done for a change. I mean its not cheesy at all. No one else could get away with playing a song like Musicology on the radio, but Prince can.

The show and the performance were awesome. It was so exciting to see Prince & Wendy together again!

His performance with Wendy leaves me with more questions than answers though.

The interview was okay, the acoustic song was fair (but good to see Wendy back), and.....

MUSICOLOGY SUCKS!!!!!

Goddamit already! Will Prince ever get off this lame ass, boring, shit-ass style music? I mean for fuck's sake, how hard is it for him to record something exciting and good to the ear? I was considering seeing him live on this tour, but if the show is gonna be anything like that song and video, then fuck that straight to hell. What a shame. disbelief

Yeah, I thought new song sounded classy and great. Like old-fashioned vid and presence of Maceo. Not cheap looking at all!! Prince very calm and articulate, loved how smart he showed he was, not much for new, insightful comments though. What did he play at the start, just a bit of acoustic, missed a bit, also, what is Reflection off of. Glad Prince interacted a bit with Weny (couple eye contacts). Enjoyed that

wow...i'm happier to be a prince than I've been for years
he seemed so humble, and relaxed and full of wisdom, or at the very least, a commitment to the notion that things can't always stay the same
I've pissed off plenty about the hypocrisy of the club, and the fact that the JW stuff seems to be leading him down a vaguely anti-semitic, anti-feminist road, but now at least I'm getting a better context for it--with a hope that he might learn to have fun again.

and the songs were 'effin beautiful...don't kid yourself...there's no hits here, but there's something new here...a real confidence in shucking off old expectations...like, "respond to the music or I don't really need you onboard"

I'm really excited for the album/tour

I really liked the interview. I don't like to be negative, but I agree completely with EvilWhiteMale, I thought Musicology sucked. It was so boring and lifeless. I can't picture it on the radio at all and I don't see how major labels could be interested in him with that kind of junk. It just reminded me of the random, mediocre, filler songs he used to thrown out in Year 1 of the NPGMC.

I thought Musicology was a nice little song...not classic Prince, but I don't expect too many classic songs in the future.

The performance with Wendy was OK...she sure did look old, but it was nice to see them back together and know that they settled any differences that they had in the past.

As far as the interview went, it was OK, but I thought his answer about not cursing was poor. He said that fans want him to sing the curse words in the old songs just so we can hear dirty words, but it's because that's the way the songs were originally. I think it is more for religious reasons that he never uses curse words, but he was a bit dishonest in not explaining this better.

But I'm not a Prince fan to hear him make speeches and do interviews, so the music is what counts and he is still great live and it was nice to see him sing an acoustic song.

Well.
I gotta say right off the bat that, I haven't liked much of what Prince has done since about '96 or so, musically, but tonight's performance of "Reflection" took my breath away. Reminds me a lot of some of the stuff on "The Truth", and to see him up there with Wendy was the nicest surprise I've had this year. She belongs right next to Prince, just playing her guitar. I don't care what anyone says.

On Musicology: I'll give this track, at least the part aired tonight, 4 out of 5 stars. The groove is similar to "The Work", but it's like whatever he was trying to do with "The Work" all fell into place on this one. I don't like "the work" much, but "Musicology"..... Damn, I dug it. I hope that 7" is available in stores.....

I thought Reflecion was a great song and sounded like a Truth outtake. Prince was classy and articulate. As for the video, I have to say that I'm not to thrilled with the song Musicology. Maybe it needs to grow on me. I hope that Prince gives a release date on Leno for the new album and I hope that Prince has some funky tracks that will get us all rocking again.

Musicology was fire. I can't wait to hear what the neptunes have done with it.

Loved the interview, Tavis gave Prince fans major props. We are a very sophisticated bunch aren't we! the most thought provoking comment from Prince was his statement that we,his fan base, provided him with the liberty to change and with that challenge the listner with new subtext and imagery. He also mentioned that he wanted to add more kinds of music to his work so that at the END he could see the full scope of it. Not often you hear Prince speaking of an end to his music. Reflections was hot also, I miss the percussions though.

One other thing. He said something that I think was right on about fans who wish he sounded like he did way back when..in that it was more of the individual wanting to experience something that they had in the past, rather than enjoy what's in front of them. Progress is a beautiful thing!

[b] I really did enjoy the show and Prince came across as being articulate, funny and charming and kind of evausive...but y'all know how he can be with certain questions if he really doesn't want to answer them, he talks around the question and never really answers it, lol
The musical performance was wonderful, he sounds great as always and it was cool to see Wendy (she did look kinda old, huh?) eek
Now 4 the video...I liked it and it was very cool and kinda funky, hell he even had some dancers up there onstage smile, looked like he was having a good time.
He looked great, sexy as ever! I'm getting excited...maybe this WILL be the year for Prince...a year of positivity, posperity (ooh, I hope I spelled that right)
and of course MORE FUNK THAN U CAN HANDLE AND THEN SOME!
BRING THAT SHOW TO TEXAS... H O U S T O N IS WAITING! nod headbang

Anxiety

I'm not crazy about Musicology, but I liked it more than I thought I would, considering for the past year or two, everyone who's heard it can't remember it well enough to say what it sounds like. I don't think it's his comeback smash hit, but I was expecting far worse for some reason. If only they woulda played the whole thing!!! mad

biggrin lol I really dug the video and song. It's really smart and is pointing this generation of performers towards the direction of real music without being preachy. I have a feeling this album will be Prince's "Supernatural" and remember you heard it here first. (Feel free to flame)

Yes Wendy looked old, but she is. She also looked like she was home. I would love to see her and Prince together again., not to take me back to '84 but because she is a great musician and writer. Lots of great music to come form those two.

I was impressed by the show too. Someone here was complaining about Tavis' down-to-earth style as an intereviewer. But he was just keeping it real, you know? He's not Bryant Gumbel, you know?

Anyways, Prince was saying some really interesting stuff. I think everytime we see a Prince interview we get to hear something interesting. He was talking about how he's more spiritual than political and that instead of people fighting each other and getting involved in war, we should seek "the truth". He also justifies why he doesn't swear anymore or get risque. And I finally think he's right. I used to complain about how he's gotten soft on us and stopped being the badass that he once was. But you can't be doing that forever now. He's like, "when you're 21, you try different things, bt you won't do that when you're 40", which is true. Also, he's like when people wanna hear his old stuff and hear the explicit stuff, you can tell what kind of person they are. Also he makes a good point about the business being made up of powers that be who are not quite educated or even appreciative in the art but in the economics of it. That is why we see few artists today and just pop stars. Prince is deep, yo.

But omigosh, PRINCE AND WENDY BACK TOGETHER AGAIN!!!!! woot!
That was a very nice tune they played, "Reflections". Is that gonna be in "Musicology" by any chance? It sounded a bit like his acoustic joints from back in the day like "Sometimes it Snows in April" or "The Cross". It also had a Joni Mitchell vibe to it. But it was sooooo cool to see Wendy and Prince play together again in like, how long? 16 or 17 years? When I was first watching that, I was reminded of seeing them 2 together in the "Kiss" video. But how long will Prince keep up his nostalgia riding? Is this a sign of the retrun of The Revolution? eek That would be fucking amazing.

Now, we fans finally got to see the "Musicology" video. It's a cute video. I believe that lil' boy with the Honer was a young version of our hero in his early days rocking out in his room to the kings of Funk. I was trying to figure out who was in P's band. I did see Maceo, which was cool. So the video was nice. That was also the first time I heard the song. It's an OK tune, but it just sounded like some typical radio-friendly modern day Funk. That's not a bad thing to me, but it's just not as good as some of his innovative Funk from back in the day. But it's good to see that he was still honoring the Funk and honoring the legends that have paved the way for provding us with THE FUNK!!!! He namechecks JB, Sly and Earth Wind & Fire, as far as I heard. But the mofo's just had to cut the muuufugggin' video short. I wanted to see the whole thing, dammit. mad

Anyways, good program. Prince is definitely not kidding about his return this time.

the interview was great, it was nice to see prince behaving like a normal person and not being all, i dont know what to call it.....weird or bizzaro acting. he made sense and was well spoken, but the classic moment was when he and wendy were singing and he sings the word "love"and looks right over at wendy.

nuff said. its always about the love.

MUSICOLOGY IS NOT AN AWFUL SONG, IT'S OK.

THE BIG PROBLEM IS THAT IT IS TOTALLY UNITERESTING, LIFELESS, AND EVEN A LITTLE BORING. IT HAS NO CHANCE TO BE PLAYED IN HEAVY ROTATION ON THE RADIO.

ALL THAT COME BACK REALLY SOUNDS LIKE RAVE PT2, UNLESS SOME REAL HITS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY SOMEONE ELSE (LET'S FACE IT, EVEN THOUGH PRINCE REMAINS AN AMAZING COMPOSER AND MUSICIAN, HE IS COMPLETELY WASHED UP AS A PRODUCER...LAGGING ABOUT 10 YEARS BEHIND EVERYONE IN USING NEW MACHINES TO PRODUCE NEW SOUNDS...IRONIC FOR SOMEONE WHO USED TO BE FAMOUS FOR SETTING SOUND TRENDS....)

I thought the interview was the same ol' Prince. Wasn't great, wasn't bad.

Great questions by Tavis.

The set w/Wendy brought tears to my eyes cry For a long time fan(m) since 81' it was so cooool to see Prince and Wendy back together. She's still very beautiful!! Prince please stay in touch this time!! Remember "In this bed I scream".

The video was off the hook.....THANK GOD Prince let someone else shoot it lol

The song was ok. After everything I've read I was a huge letdown.

Oh well, so far 2004 is looking like a good year for Prince.....JUST DON'T FUCK IT UP!!!!!

The show was great!!!! It was just too short. I loved the song that he did with Wendy. But I must admit that she did look old. Isn't she like 7 or 8 yrs younger than P?
