The thing with the remaster, is that you can never hear it without comparing it to the original. And by that comparison it loses hands down. Seen as a tune by itself, it's probably quite funky.

The original version has a classic, timeless quality to it, that opening synthesizer and drum combination is like an awesome wall of sound crashing down on you. The remake completely lacks that raw quality, it is too over-produced.

The biggest mistake Prince made with the remaster, is he made it very much of the then, he took away it's timeless quality and pinned it firmly into a particular style he was doing at that time - especially shown by his inclusion of Chaka, Dougie Fresh and Larry Graham, his cronies at that particular time. Dougie's rap is particularly unnecessary.

And I hate singles that just fill up the space with edits and rubbish remixes of the original.

In fact, how could you improve the original? If Prince had just remastered the sound quality and maybe added a new verse or two, that would have been cool. But no, he just HAD to play around with it, didn't he?!

If you've been very bad and want to punish yourself, put New Master on. If you've been very very bad, listen to the New Master AND watch Prince's performance of 1999 in RAVE ON TO THE YEAR 2000... WITH the sound ON and no looking away from the pitple babushka!

As if NPS wasn't cruel enough, he had to go bastardize the good stuff too.

But Tony P---oh HELL no. He was awful. Cuz P was rappin' long ago before it was labeled then tricked himself into thinking he wasn't so he tried to hard (IMO). "You can dance if you want to..."

Did you see the Grammy's? Hip Hop nominees? Yeah...as usual, P was down well before most...love him 4 it too.
