Prince not part of the funk segment on Grammys? Sounds like Prince is not going to be part of the funk part of the show after all, judging by the Grammy site. How can they not have him be part of that when he's in the building?

IMO Prince talks himself up as more of a funk artist then he actually is. 95% of his music is nowhere near "funk".

That's actually quite true.
I once wanted to make myself some mixtapes with 100% funk from Prince, couldn't even find that much to be honest. "How embarrasing to be human!"

That's interesting. While he uses many styles, I still think his live shows evince someone steeped in funk. I'd also say there's a large number of his songs that are funk: Erotic City, 1+1+1=3, My Name Is Prince, Sexy MF, and lots of other songs.
I'd still love to hear him play bass alongside Bootsy.

Well he'll be sitting in the audience to check my boys Kast with EWF,P-Funk and RRFB then.I hope they show his face on camera when Dre is on stage so I can see if he's diggin him. [This message was edited Sun Feb 8 10:10:54 PST 2004 by SexxyCool] Sister Fate

Prince was the messiah of Funk.
A lot of what you all think is Funk is acually Disco which is a hybrid of funk.Funk is a mixing of all genres and laying it down with a bass line. Prince was the "One".He mixed it all up and did it so well that a lot of his music was labeled as pop/rock when it was the Funk.

nope. A lot of what Prince does is Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop music. Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop music.
He does funk "so effortlessly", it seems like he has a lot of funk tunes. test

Let's keep it in perspective. A lot of what he does is funky, but you get a group of funk-lovin' musicians together for the lowdown, and you'll hear a lot of other names:
George Duke Cameo Ohio Players Rick James George Clinton, et al. Prince is funky, no doubt. But there are some other cats who established their reputations through some seriously funk.

Let me explain .
Prince brought balance to the Funk . Like Anikin Skywalker in Star Wars or Neo in the Matrix. He is the ONE . Believe it or not . That is the reason you hear "pop" in the music. That is the reason you hear "rock" in the music. That is the reason you hear "soul" in the music. That is the reason you hear "jazz" in the music. He takes it all and makes it FUNKY.

At the young, young age of 4, he INVENTED the bass guitar. That's how deep his genious is. Legend has it that, in their heyday, the Meters used to consult a prophet to hear how Prince would approach funk jams in the summer of '84 -- just so they could get their stuff tight!!! I hear Prince is actually responsible for there being a bass clef.

It was a complete injustice to NOT have Prince onstage during the Funk performance. Whether or not you believe that he's a TRUE funk artist, he is associated with the genre and he associates HIMSELF with the genre. Prince has paid his dues and deserved a spot on that stage.
That was just NOT right. Heck-!...even Bootsy Collins got his raggedy-old-self up there!!! By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

That was just NOT right. Heck-!...even Bootsy Collins got his raggedy-old-self up there!!! As I see it, Prince would not need an invite to participate had he wanted to do so. He could have strolled onstage uninvited and no one would have said anything. Yet he apparently declined to show the initiative to get onstage, for whatever reason. And Pfunkjazz, George Clinton, who undeniably belongs on Mt. Funkmore, said that Prince "kept the funk" alive. He may not have been one of the great funk artists, as funk purist like yourself may define the term, but to say that he is in no way a funk artist is a stretch. Maybe he didn't want to be the smallest funkster up there. I would wonder what your collection looks like if you can't come up with a couple of tapes.

A) I think Prince was already gone at the time of the "Funk Tribute"...
B) Being a musician and a true Funk head, I feel I can say that the tribute 2 funk sucked 4 me personally... I love E,W, & F, P-Funk, etc, but only Robert Randolph had any energy... Prince was better off not being up there in that sloppy mayhem. Peace. G. "He's a musician's musician..."
