"Ooh, REWIND THAT!" List your favorite Prince song moments

Some of my musician friends and I share a weird characteristic. It's called "rewinditis." Regardless of the genre or the artist, if we hear something that just rocks us, we have to rewind the tape or CD to hear it again.

P has provided me a lot of rewind moments over the years. Here are some of mine (most are guitar-oriented, but yours needn't be). Cheers.

1. The 2-note beginning of Eric Leeds' solo in Mountains (ext. version). Something about that point of the song is just so cool. And, Eric's phrasing is sick. Always.

2. The guitar solo in "Scandalous (The Rapture)." Prince's tone (I think it was a Cloud), nimble phrasing and effects were masterful.

3. The string squeak from a bass or guitar in "Temptation" (just before P sings, "Mine, little darlin', is the opposite of ice"). That's a rocker, and the Revolution managed to make it sound lumbering and roomy at the same time.

4. The rapid, descending scale in the solo from the Crystal Ball version of "The Ride." I can't describe it. I'm not articulate enough to. But it precedes the string bends that lead back into the final chorus.

5. The high note Prince hits in "7" ("... so don't CRYYYYY-YYYY!") Gosh. I'm not even crazy about the song, but that note makes me shake my head, every time.

6. By the same token, the key change/vamp to "Come," when the key shifts from minor to major and the horn hits start. Prince goes mad high on this one, too.

7. In "Letitgo," if you listen with headphones, you can hear Prince whispering "letitgo," every couple of seconds.

8. "Joy in Repetition," the portion of the guitar solo, where Prince does that weird scale over and over again.

8b. The introduction of the snare in "JIR."

9. Prince's guitar work on Madonna's "Like a Prayer" and "Act of Contrition.

10. His "Frere Jacques" bass solo in "A Love Bizarre." Shucks, any solo he takes in that song, for that matter.

I totally agree. Always very cool to me, too. Used to great effect in "Girl 6," but the bar's pretty low where that's concerned.

3. the second verse of Push.... several parts in that song actually.

Especially Prince's little scream in that verse: "Ah-YAH!"

Oh lawd...so, so many...but you reminded me of one of my favorites: The second 'part' of the distorted intro guitar riffs at "Sex" ... the guitar had just gone 'down scale' then the next bit jumps to this twitchy psycho note, lol.. i can't describe it, all i can do is hit rewind lol

Im so glad somone thought of this post, this is probably THE main reason im a Prince fan; the amazing lil suprises he does that just NO one else can do without lookin weird or stupid.

Play in the sunshine, when it went into the "Lets get outta here" and the bass synth changes key.

the key change/vamp to "Come," when the key shifts from minor to major and the horn hits start.

Pearls before the swine, where the percussion doesnt seem to fit but covers the space perfectly (unless they die of ooooold aaage...*that part*)

Every bit of 3 chains.

Opening of rock n roll is alive, the funky guitar bass drum part.

If i was your girlfriend - "we can go to the movies and CRY HI HI together" when i heard him actually sound like he was cryin that BLEW my mind.

Saviour - The whole explosion bass drum part near the end .

Had U, should exsist in this universe. (thats a compliment)

Any of the Clare Fischer parts that are noticable, i think prince uses clare's genius better that just about anyone else.

Any and all of Mike B's tom rolls. (you BETTER not say anything about his fat rolls)

Solo on Holy River

The preview of Gamillah on the Rave dvd, i REALLY wish he had left the guitar dirty. sad

Darling nikki, that whole song is so far from a formula till it hurts me to try to rationalize it.

Theres prolly some i missed. oh well

When he says, “thunder, thunder, yeah yeah yeah” in “Thunder.”
The guitar solo in “Gold.”
The opening “What am I gonna do?” of “Poom Poom.”
Sheila’s and Cat’s backing vocals on Lovesexy and the Black Album. I just adore those two, particularly on “Anna Stesia” and “Cindy C.”
The 3rd chorus of “Now” when he goes a little crazy.
The throat clearing at the very beginning of “I Love U But I Don’t Trust U.”
The “I’m the one who sent the herbs…” section of “Sleep Around.”
The end of “Papa.”
The slow “Ballad of Dorothy Parker” in the remix of “Letitgo.” Oh my goodness does that get me every time.
The super low voiced “baby” in “Scandalous S*x Suite”.
The part in “The Greatest Romance Ever Sold” that goes, “in the middle of it all, we kiss and like rain we fall.” Man, that’s tight.
The end of “Alphabet St.” where the opening chords come back.
The completely perfect mix of instruments in “Strange Relationship,” “She’s Always In My Hair, and “A Love Bizarre.”
The part where the music changes in “Joint 2 Joint,” when he goes into, “Joint 2 joint nothin’ comes for free, if you show ur love u can get with me.”
The higher backing vocal saying “Controversy” in “Controversy.”
The very beginning of “D.M.S.R.”
The very last “U r with me” in “Adore.”

The list could go on and on.
"She made me glad to be a man"

ThreadBare, I think I love you! I love this thread!!!

I love the way the talking part at the end of Automatic seems to circle my head when I listen to it on headphones.

I love when the horns kick in at the end of La La La He He He.

I love the beginning intro of the live version Of JIR on the live set.

I love how Prince says "Rhonda, come round here" on the live version of Dorothy Parker.

- The bridge on "One Kiss at a Time", especially the part where he sings "time would stop, and the sky would fall- and all would see the glory, of what true love can bring"...genius- a lot of his bridges go so far away from the verses and choruses in his songs that when he finds a way back from a bridge, you're just thinking- how did he do that and make it sound so good?!

-The last minute or so of "I Hate U" is definite rewind material

-The last three to four minutes of the extended version of "Billy Jack Bitch" with its unbelievable horn and guitar parts

I don't know if anybody will know what I'm referring to, but in 'International Lover' there's this keyboard/piano part right after Prince says:

"We ask that U please observe the "No Letting Go" sign. I anticipate a few turbulence along the way"

For some reason that part always does it for me.
