Rick James laghs at Prince?

This is from an old wall of sound interview. It's not online anymore.

I don't know, man; Prince went crazy for me. I don't really follow him. I think Prince is just making music for Prince. I heard a little bit of what he was up to, and it sounded so contrived, so self-indulgent. When I heard that song "Betcha by Golly Wow" by the Stylistics [covered by Prince on Emancipation], I just fell off the chair laughing that he could do such an atrocious job on such a classic tune.

Let's see; This from a crack addict and ex-con, who married a trailer park queen. I wonder if Prince ever looked at Rick James life and fell off the chair laughing?

If Prince is making music just for Prince - Thanks to the Powers that be for that! An artist should be making music for their own joy - not others - thats when excellence comes out ! ! Not the puppet singers that mimic others and learn choreographed moves and live only to please their fans so they will be tops on the charts etc. etc. . . .

Y'all are just haters.(c'mon, don't be a hater...) Just because someone disses Prince, so what. Sh*t, I fell out of the chair when Prince pulled that "Bet'cha By Golly Wow" b.s., I don't care Rick has been dissing Prince since 1980 and it has no bearing on the music. Rick James is the funk, his early 80's albums are still the bomb azz funk. Of course when he stopped druging up and got clean the funk was gone. But you can't deny his contribution. Rick's disdain for Prince goes back to when Prince was opening for Rick. Rick's mother came to one of the shows and wanted to take a photo with Prince and he dissed her and told her no. Now we all know if someone disses your mom, you're not having it...

Peace, Serveitupfrankie*

true. nod he has quite a few songs under his belt, but unfortunately his choice in lifestyle overshadowed all of that so folks tend to think he was a one-hit wonder, but he ain't.

To many who? 12-15 year olds? In that case, yes, you're right. To many 12-15 year olds, he only has one "decent" song that's he's known for. Many people also have no idea who Prince is, or think he died some time back in 1984.

No one thinks Prince has died. Everyone knows that Rick is a crackhead and has a bad attitude towards everyone. Even his fans. He did a show in the D.C area a few months ago and yelled at fans who were not giving him the applause that he expected.

Let's face it Prince will be on the Grammies picking up an award and performing Rick will be at home.

Your argument is that people think Prince is dead. Not so or he would not have been invited to the Grammies.

I'd say it was sour grapes on Rick's part, but Rick at his peak was never a fraction as good as Prince was at his.

and Jail lets not forget jail the brotha did some time!! He truly is a loser on that point!!! BUUUT if you think Rick James had just superfreak as a hit then you are in desperate need of help!! I am not going to go down the list for you cause you need to do your own homework. But you sound kinda simple saying he had only ONE hit!! POP charts did not rule the world in OUR music when he was around.

Check ya self on that one, and go get a late pass

I didn't say that everyone thought that he was dead.
I was just pointing out that not everyone thought Rick James had one single that was made apparently, more popular by MC Hammer. And those who do think his only song was "Super Freak" probably aren't much into music that isn't constantly being played on radio.

Come on now. "Superfreak" was not his only hit. In the 75-80 era Rick James would have been the equivalent to say R. Kelly (Hmmph the similarities) oK. anyway. With HITS like: "Mary Jane", "Give it to Me", "Cold Blooded", and oh don't forget the Mary Jane Girls and Teena Marie. Prince copied alot from Rick's way of being especially his look and the girl groups. Vanity Six and Apolonnia 6 are comeplete knock offs of MJ Girls.

Prince is certainly more talented as a musician and writer/producer and influence. But for those 5 years in the 70's-80's Rick James was the Funkmeister second only to Parliment Family. Prince is the POPFunkSoulRockFusion Alpha and Omega.
