Exaggerated is probably a better description. He bloated up and fell apart the last few months of his life, and people get the impression he was fat for the last several years - he really was in great shape not too long before that. Partly due to idiot doctors, partly because of his manager, and partly because of his wife leaving him. What's tragic about Elvis is what his manager did to his career and his life.

Certainly, he had no one around him with his best interests. I'm no fan of the colonels. He must have been screwed up a lot of the time. From what I've read and some of the clips i've seen and heard he definitely had problems. The Alohos special was in 73(?) and he looked stoned to me, in pre concert interviews and on stage. Also, heard he actually collapsed on stage at one point. Not that these demonizes him, I love him a lot more than I love Prince. Prince has also stolen a lot of his moves from Elvis going back a long time. Nobody ever notices this but me.
Visually, I think Prince's stature limits his presence a little bit, it's not that he's short it's also that he is not long or appears big at all. Elvis looked like a giant on stage. Prince looks like a midget. I think this is due to his body proportions.[/quot

Look at it as if Elvis were holding those moves for Prince. He wasn't an original and his impact was manufactured by the music industry similarly to the Beatles (who later became good songwriters) and Michael Jackson. Elvis just brought certain things that were already being done to the mainstream.

I've seen Prince 4 times now, and I have enjoyed each and every show. The last one, however, focused too much on new stuff and not the back catalog. Oh well.

I also saw Prince during a soundcheck in Detroit, and THAT was the most amazing musical experience I have ever had, period. Seeing him practice with the Hohner, in a crowd of only about 100 people . . . I was 20 feet away from the man, and his voice was perfect -- guitar playing was perfect -- AND, it was live -- no recordings.

Lenny Kravitz is no hack live either -- he's very good.

See, anyone can put on a good "show". Britney has good performances (I will give her that) -- it's just that the music sucks. The lighting, dancing, theatrics are cool for anyone.

So who is good, lately? The only other talent that compares to Prince, to me, is David Gray. Now, I'm not even a David Gray "fan", but I was taken to his concert on Super Bowl Sunday 2002, and it blew my mind. It was so perfect, so acoustic at times and then electric. I guess the live show lends itself to that kind of music (acoustic folk rock).

I think when all is said and done, Prince will rank quite highly among the best LIVE performers. Right now Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews rank very highly too, but I have not had the pleasure of seeing either of those bands.

I disagree with all of the above. Elvis was holding these moves for Prince? No, no. Elvis was a creature of spontaneity who did what he felt. Those legendary moves that we remember were very un-selfconscious and unrehearsed until after he gained more experience, then it became rote. He wasn't an original? Well, I don't know what your definition is but his impact on America and the world speaks for itself. As far as him being manufactured, well he was the first rock and roll superstar and he had to break through all kinds of barriers that have not been there since. Anyone who denies elvis' greatness just has an axe to grind, case closed.

His shows used to be fantastic, but those days are long gone. Korn is one of the best live bands out there. I would put them over the Prince of the past bunch of years.
