Prince's early falsetto was not very good at all, more a studio product than real ability. Falsetto is a strange register to use, I use it as a device but there is no way of me getting around sounding either creepy or little crappy in that register. So I think it's a tough one to master. At any rate, if you don't like his live falsetto there is one show that will change your mind. The Vegas dvd has a jazz version of Gotta Broken Heart Again that is as near perfect a performance as I have seen, not just from Prince but from anyone. He brought the audience cheering to it's feet with his master and passion.

You might have missed him kick The Beautiful Ones Sunday Morning at the HOB (I think it was Sunday...) It was non raspy, beautiful clean.. (Probably around 3:30 or so)...
I think Prince might be at his best after midnight... cracknbush

I think Prince might be at his best after midnight... You notice his falsetto is rough too? I like the graininess of his falsetto, nobody else sounds like that. You could be right about his voice being better later at night. I think the voice like any muscle, loosens up during the course of a day. Wish I coulda seen that performance. I sing The beautiful ones too but I can't really get it.

I LOVE it when he does When u were mine and Let's work live with falsetto.
And the way he starts singing the chorus to Sometimes it snows... on the Vegas dvd is really very sweet

why prince didn't do clean voice on first 3 records, was he insecure in his voice?

i like 'em both. there are times when the falsetto is just perfect for the song and then there are times when it's not.

I like them both too, and he does have a flexible falsetto. It can be really delicate, and it can be gritty and straightforward, so that you almost forget he's using falsetto. He's an amazing vocalist. He'd be an ok artist if he weren't such a great singer, but it's his voice on top of the rest that makes him brilliant.

falsetto is hard to get right everytime, and it is probably crucial that every thing is adjusted just so, so you can hear your self and not straining your voice over the rest of the instruments, I think his falsetto voice is just as superb, just difficult to have things adjusted accordingly when moving from one acoustic space to another AND from doing one style of a song to another, its too easy to strain your voice

I think Prince might be at his best after midnight... SERIOUSLY this may be true I find I can sing or flow from differnt notes much better later at night than during the day, I am quite sure this different time of day thing holds true for all great vocalists just as the temperature of the room also has a great effect upon the vocal cords as well, why Aretha insists that the air conditioning be off otherwise she would refuse to sing even if the entire place was an oven!
