Prince is a great showman. His stage persona is really on point. Steve could learn a thing or two about performing from Prince. As for playing guitar; I'm with Steve on that. Same thing I think when I hear Prince solo most of the times. After you asked why he was there, he probably said to himself "Why AM I here" and booked out. Steve is arrogant himself, though. He once gave a friend of mine who was a tech at a venue he performed at a GUITAR PICK as if my friend was the little boy in the Mean Joe Green coke commercial after he approached him wanting to ask about some of his techniques. My friend, who is also a guitarist said after that he lost respect for Steve as a person. So, what did you ask Stevie Nicks? (falling for the bait) | |

Conceivably, there are legions of unknown guitarists out there that are better than Prince. THIS IS TRUE. But for whatever reason, those guys have no memorable tracks, no instantly recognizable solos, and no legacy. Your argument is like saying that there are scores of beautiful trees that fall unnoticed in the forest. Or like saying that there were guys at Rucker that were better passers than Magic Johnson. It might be true, but . . . SO? How many cats do you think those unknowns inspired to pick up a guitar? How many of those cats will be recognized by subsequent generations for their work? Prince isn't the best. You have made that point abundantly clear. But do you really think this guy is merely average? Come on! Rarely does any orger claim that Prince is the G.O.A.T. on guitar, so I don't see the need for beating a dead horse. All I know is he's damn good. We can tie this up nicely by saying that Prince uses the guitar in his arrangements IMO perfectly, not over or under done. Steve actually makes "guitar music", there is a HUGE diffrence. Prince is doin the whole showmanship type thing on guitar while steve is trying to make the damn thing walk. I am both a HUGE Vai fan AND a HUGE Prince fan, i think they are completely sovereign in ability. Steve sits in his place and makes great music based around guitar, Prince sits at his studio and makes music around, well, around.....erm, well he just makes it. Anyway I think vai gets a lil too caught up in the technicalities of music, which can turn people off, while prince is a lil overrated in his technical skills. BUT! In closing, i can FEEL steve's music, AND i FEEL prince's music, so it doesnt matter, just dont say steve hates prince or vice versa blah blah blah, im sure they both respect each other equally.
P.S. I really do think that ONLY a fan of both can have balanced and fair opinions, if you hate steve dont just say he sucks, try to "get it" first. And if you hate prince, well, die. Disclaimer: All sentences resembling insults alive or otherwise, are purely coincedental. | |
