He could've gone from that funky bit of Beyonce's song into the funky bit of Everlasting Now. That would've worked well. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

I think he got it right. The way I see it he only had two choices - either play a brand new song for an upcoming release which would have had to be great, or celebrate the 20th anniversary of PR. Anything else would have been irrelevant and made no sense to play and would not have given him the same level of positive interest. I think he wants to keep what he's up to in the studio under wraps at the moment and I expect some major release later this year, so playing PR, and especially a medley including Crazy in Love was a brilliant move to show off in a very short his astonishing talents to the general public.
He also chose the best partner not in terms of talent (I thought she was quite average really) but in terms of her being a winner and ability to generate excitement as well as attract the cameras and attention to himself (she was well used, and to those who say the Grammys used Prince, I'd say Prince used the Grammys in a masterful stroke), and lastly and most surprisingly for me, he did not shoot himself in the foot with some bloody awkward comment like "death to prince" or "time is a trick"..

i like his new stuff, but this was surely the right move. It gets people talking much more. It would be exactly the same for Michael Jackson: hypothetical scenario 1 - he opens the show with some new material. hypothetical scenario 2 - the Billie Jean beat kicks in, right at the start in the anniversary year of thriller.
It just makes sense commercially. Plus i'll never be tired of listening to his old stuff. Obviously this is a bit different (because it ain't a concert) but wasn't it prince (it may have been another artist, I can't remember),who said in an interview about when they were younger, going to a concert and thinking (and I paraphrase) "when I pay my money I want to hear songs I know and can sing along to".

That`s what I would have liked to have seen. Commercially, it would have been a weaker decision. But he would have shown where he is musically today. Besides, I consider "Everlasting Now" much better music than pretty much anything on Purple Rain.

Yes, he has the best 'back catalog'. I don't think he's as concerned about commercial popularity as it may seem. I bet he wants to incorporate his sort of 'new style' into the mainstream, and there's a certain way he has to go about doing that. We all know the man still 'has it'. Some may even argue that he's better than ever. His goal is to let the whole world know that. Hopefully for my sake, he'll take some attention off of the repetitive mainstream. How many more 45 Cents and G-Units can we tolerate. G-g-g-g-Jello! Blue Blue

If he played TRC stuff, he'd be laughed off stage. I think even HE knew better. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

"The Work" or "Everlasting now" easily beats "Baby Im a star". Back in 1984, he was tryin`to be funky. Today he is. If you dis the funky tunes on TRC, than you really have no idea what funk is about.

See, like usual you can`t actually comment my reply, but you start talking ugly. You can`t even say why you find TRC is junk (please don`t tell me it`s because of Wedding Feast). TRC is not only Prince`s funkiest album up to this day, but it`s also his most soulful one. But since you have shown off your misunderstanding of the black culture on various occasions, it doesn`t surprise me that you have a problem with the "blacker" Prince.

the3rddoctor said: Lol, if you say so... Musically speakin`, much of Purple Rain is weaker material than TRC. PR has some strong moments - The Beautiful Ones and Darlin Nikki - but the rest is nothing but average pop. One may like ir more than another, but Purple Rain is truly overrated. TRC is much more complex. It shows more musical skills -- the live drumming is a good example. It`s tighter and more focused and musically more mature (lyrics aside). These are all reasons why so many people don`t like it. Complex works are always harder to access by the masses. In the end, of course, it`s always a matter of taste. But you honestly can`t tell me that "Baby I`m a Star" can musically beat "The Work" or "Everlasting now".

You never asked me why I didn't like TRC, stink-ass. Maybe you should ask me questions instead of making presumptions the way you do. And yes, you are following me around. It's become a strange obsession. TRC is not only Prince`s funkiest album up to this day, but it`s also his most soulful one. Well then listen to it all you want until your ears bleed. You're among the .0004% of music listeners who have even heard of TRC, much less think it's good. [/quote]It`s pretty much pointless to ask you any questions, because you never get around to answer them. Well then listen to it all you want until your ears bleed. You're among the .0004% of music listeners who have even heard of TRC, much less think it's good. Do you really think that the number of listeners is relevant to the quality of an album? Then Britney Spears would be a Goddess of Music... The professional musicians I know consider TRC amongst Prince`s best work. I am talking about funk musicians though, they might not be your thing anyway. You know what? If you wanna throw race into this shit, then you can go fuck yourself. Get back to me when you've matured. Did I hit your weak spot here? Awww...

Alright, then don't respond to me then. Just admit that you want my attention. Do you really think that the number of listeners is relevant to the quality of an album? Then Britney Spears would be a Goddess of Music... The professional musicians I know consider TRC amongst Prince`s best work. I am talking about funk musicians though, they might not be your thing anyway. I'm gonna call you Chuckles from now on cuz you love the "lol" emoticon so much. So Chuckles, I really don't care what your funky musicians think about TRC, they're in a very small group. If the album was so great, a buzz would have been created and more people would have bought it. But the fact is, it's boring and lame. Did I hit your weak spot here? Awww... Don't flatter yourself Chuckles, you're not that good. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

More EvilWhiteLogic. The more an album sells and the more the masses like it, the better it must be. By the way, I think I told you before that I am not attracted to men with little brains, thin lips and growing baldness at age 28... So don`t feel flattered just because I enjoy setting you straight...

I have to agree Ubiquity alot of Purple R has not stood the test of time. The Rainbow C might do better in time. Still for the occasional Prince fan anything from Purplr rain gives them that fuzzy feeling.

rainbow children is musicly the best ever album by prince.
it's very soulful,it will stand the test of time. if somnebody ask me why i consider prince a genius i would not say because he droped the bass from when doves cry, i would put in "the last december" that song is amazing jorney to the soul of one man. it's incredable song. that song tells you a story, every minute of it is fantastic. in that song alone you can hear all the beauty of prince. and ppl heard more of rainbow children then u would think. i live in a small town in serbia.and in my city at least 25 ppl heard that album(all excepted it great) my town is 2000 ppl living by the way.
