I wouldnt call this a major u turn- I think that he has already ventured recording with EMI (Emancipation) and BMG (Rave). So there isnt nothing new here. I think RC was too radical a record and hence the inability to get a larger record deal. This is a smart move- If I recall correctly he just wanted justice for artists (esp black artists) who have historically been creatively and economically raped by the system.
If he manages to get a fairer more equitable deal with a major distributor this will be good for him- at the end of the day he is a professional and needs to earn a living- like the rest of his contempararies (even though he works much harder than them). I think it is a shame that a generation of people would otherwise miss out on this living genius- and his depth and breadth of contribution. | |
