Why Prince did the Grammy performance

To show everyone that they still cant fuck with him even singing 20 year old classics! And the hottest singer in the industry is still honored to share the stage with him

Considering it took EWF, Parliament Funkadelic, Outkast and Randolph Johnson to supposedly top a Prince mini-medley, Prince's a pretty good mop then.

Callmecrazy, but I think the performance by the White Stripes was awesome. There was something very sick and gritty about it. I love the rawness. I'm not even a big fan of theirs. I heard one album De Stijl ( I think I spelled that right) and it was pretty cool.
I don't think Jack White deserves to be rated so highly by Rolling Stone as a guitarist (#17 or something ridiculous) but I thought he threw down Sunday night.

I also thought that the Foo Fighters and Chick Corea was a weird combo, but it worked for me. At least with that particular song (Times Like These). I love me some FOO.nod
Their version of Darling Nikki is just insane.

I personally think that Prince could have helped out the "so-called" funk church by leading them. How do you have Funk Church without one of the greatest Preachers of all? You don't. That's why I was not that impressed. White Stripes were good too.

if they wanted to do it right, they would of had one of the following bands reunite for the night:

Rose Royce
Gap Band
Ohio Players

As a Funk Head and a musician, I gotta say the Funk tribute sucked big time, and was a major disappointment...

Robert Randolph kicked some izzz-ass, but E,W,&F and P-Funk muggs were sloppy and off.

I have no Idea why every keeps praising that funk tribute. I felt that it was pretty lame. Espicially when parliament came out. They were all out of time for about 8 bars. And not a just a little bit behind the beat, just to turn U on. WAY behind the beat. Their performance seemed to lack enthusiasm and skill I afraid to say. It reminded me of when I saw Parliament at Bridges Auditorium at the Clairemont Colleges in CLairmont(of course.) That show was so horrible and tired I had to leave early. I was highly dosapointed. I'm GLAD Prince didn't ruin his reputation by getting on that stage with them. I would bet that he is glad too.

I hadn't read this post before I wrote mine, but my sentiments exactly. I forgot to mention Robert Randolph. His cut was hella tight. But like Giovanni said, the rest were sloppy and off.

Those of us who are old enough to not be wet behind the ears and have seen Parliament Funkadelic live in the 70s know that they have always been loose and sloppy.

The reality is Prince WAS LUCKY to hitch a ride onto Beyonce's ass and made the best of it. There is no logical reason to have him opening the GRAMMYS with 20 yr old songs. Bless her heart, Beyonce was all aflutter with the association. She is as big a fan as any of you dorks and, let's face it, she would have opened regardless of Janet's little titty affair.

No doubt, Prince took Beyonce's set and retooled it to rekindle interest in his own flagging career. Prince may be shit as a businessman, but he's a helllacious entertainer. He worked the whole thang to his benefit. More power to him for recognizing the opportunity and seizing it. Now, the next moves are his.

AS per the FUNK tribute. I don't think Prince belonged there at all. First off, the stage was already crowded with 2 large bands (that should have had the whole night to themselves!). Most importantly, Prince jumping up on stage would have seemed like the same old immature spoiled brat that threw a tantrum against WARNERS. If you checked how folks frowned on 50 Cents' bum-rush, you know what I mean.

The FUNK segment was way too much of a good thing; reduced to three minutes EWF & PFUNK not only had to cram a lifetime of hits into 3 minutes each, but they had to share the stage with two new (and inspiring!) acts. Prince had the perfect platform to showcase himself (even more so, with a gorgeous woman)!

EWF did not look well. Maurice is hurting pretty bad and Phil's vocice was strained and ragged. Happily, Verdine was up and pumping the funk for 'em. Can't say if there's any more life in the group. I hope it's just road-weariness.

PFUNK was reduced to doing snippets of their vast catalog. Yet and still, credit George for bringing the funk into the audience and engaging the strait-laced crowd. Folks was up on their feet for the funk! This is how the MOTHERSHIP flies. Some of y'all just don't know, so step your punk-asses off!! Maurice and Phil singin' along and Verdine lined up behind Bootsy on bass! PFUNK even pulled out that hardcore Lil Jon ditty "To the Window. To The Wall...skeet skeet skeet"! Oh this is so funky I can smell it!

Y'all, c'mon and cop some stank.

I got nothin' but love for youngsters like Beyonce, OUTKAST and Robert Randolph (he shoulda had his own segment instead of that Martina MacBride crap!), but ain't nothin I love more in the world than watching old black men ... (I'll say it again cuz some of y'all is hatin' on your elders) OLD BLACK MEN... play the music they created. Whether it's blues jazz or funk. They made this music and they still live to play it for us. Y'all betta watch it cuz Prince'll be a old sonuvabitch one day.

BTW That WHITE STRIPES segment was the tightest of the night. They blended blues and rock a freaked the whole thing out. The Beatles tribute was tight, (tho' Sting needed to tone his vox down a bit). Big ups to Pharrell for hittin' the drums (anybody catch Fish from FIshbone in Timberlake's band?)
