Why i was a little dissapointed with the Grammy peformance..

I was shocked and totally thrilled to see him come out first, but sad that they forced him to play his biggest most overplayed mainstream hits. And I'm sorry, but with the real horns, "Baby I'm a Star" sounds like Tom Jones in Vegas. th whole medley was very Vegasy..what happened to LESS IS MORE???

I tried to pretend I was 16 again hearing these songs for the first time. Would I be as in awe as I was in 1984? Not even close now. Sure Prince is still the best performer out there, but these songs sound dated. It reminded me of the first time I saw James Brown on TV probably around 1979. He was obviously a captivating performer and full of style, but his songs I could tell were old and not fresh. It seemed like he was well respected by everyone for what he did, not for what he was doing.

I have high hopes for Prince this year.. I think he will be inspired by some of the new artists to break through again and write some geat new songs. I hope he does, cause every year that passes, all those old songs have less of an effect on me, especially with the new Vegas arrangements. If he wants to strip them down again and get funky, well then maybe I'd be transported back to 1984 for real..

I think I must have a split personality or something, because I think the exact same thing as "DMSR" and I don't recall writing that earlier!

I looked past that and just saw a musical genius finally being recognized by tearing the place apart with another great performance with a really hot act by his side.

Um, folks, they didn't "force" him to play those songs; I have friends who work for and are members of NARAS, and the academy wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of PURPLE RAIN, considered by most in the industry as one of greatest rock & roll movies in music history.

So I'm sorry, but, when you only have about six minutes for
a live broadcast to recognize an anniversary, I would think a medley is the correct way to go. I would rather him have done the medley, than say, just one song from the soundtrack- and doing other material was not the point here. In a performance situation such as this, as another orger so brilliantly put it in another thread, no he could not have done a 12 minute version of ADORE, lol!

You are totally right...could not agree more! But I guess it is better seeing him do it now rather than when he is so old they have to wheel him out on stage! smile Hey maybe by then, he will finally return the the nasty Prince that he was back in 1984... smile hehe

Nasty old Prince in a wheelchair!

Well that's my point, the only way Prince would get on this show would be to play the Purple Rain stuff, sure its better than nothing, but when I see Outkast getting all these awards, I'm glad for them, but just hoping Prince can just get it back and kick everyone's ass again..He could write "Hey Ya" in his sleep. He could write 12 great soongs better than "Hey Ya" but he doesn't seem inspired lately to even try, or maybe he's just over it.
