I know that there are dozens of threats already, but it seems, that everybody wants to add something to the Grammy Award show and I really did not know where to put my comment properly.

First of all I have to say, that we are making way to much fuzz out of the performance...

Pls bear in mind that the Grammy's are made to hail the products of the music industry, there is nothing related to real art there (yes, that is my opinion). I think that there were a couple of cool albums in 2003 that haven't even been nominated, but deserved far more attention. Anyway.

The rule is: If you want to stay in the business you have to be at the Grammy's. Performing, Presenting, Receiving Honors or whatever. The Grammy's include all the celebrities that have been choosen (by the industry) being worth to get their support in 2004. In this respect it means alot that Prince is amongst those artists, especially if you consider the fact, that he does not bow to the general rules of music industry.

Do we know if he had a choice? I mean, if he would have said: "I want to perform "East" ", would the Grammy Association let him be there? We don't know for sure, but most probably not. The rule for the "old guys" is that you have to mix with the youngsters to show your respect for them and make the audience believe that you see them as the future of music. Example: Sting performance (sorry I did not like it at all).

If this is the 20th year of Purple Rain, it is a good choice for Prince to take the opportunity to get back in the focus of the audience, if he is allowed to do so by the decision makers (industry tycoons). Most probably a lot of people will be reminded of him and check out what he has done recently. A good thing for him, being depended on "direct sales".

Also you cannot compare a TV appearance with a full show / aftershow. That has been mentioned some times in other threads today. As an artist you have to walk on the stage, blow the roof off and disappear. And that is exactly what he did. Do not forget, that most of the people out there do not know as much about the concerts / aftershows, etc. as we do. They cannot compare it to "Bataclan 2002", "Small Club" and others. There is no common knowledge about his virtuosity on stage. He has to do something that attracts additional people to him as an artist. His fanbase already knows better, we do not need an additional prove of his performing ability.

So let's keep calm and be happy that apparantely the music industry is in need of an real Superstar. And he still is.
