Non-fan Observations on Prince's Grammy performance

The following are comments on Prince's Grammy performance taken from another message board. Keep in mind this board and these people aren't "Prince fans" in the sense that folks here on P.org are - so I find their observations very interesting.

Each new comment is separated by a "===".

People out there are ripe for the picking, Prince! This could be a big year for you. The public seem responsive to a comeback.

Great opening to the Grammy's. The guy may not have done anything musically interesting in over a decade, but get him on a stage live and he still puts most current musicans and groups to shame.

===

Good god. I squealed like a little girl. I forgot how much I used to love Prince. Now, THAT's some entertainment,right there.

(thinking i'll be watching and listening to Purple Rain all week)

===

He showed Janet how an Eighties/Nineties icon is supposed to behave in public... with class and with chops!

===

I agree!! And I'm not even a Prince fan. But he was good!

===

sexy, but not scummy. pretty to look at, nice to hear, too.

===

Amen to that...an excellent opening...he 'brought' it.

luved the Vince Gill/Sting/Dave Matthews Beatles tune also...

===

How many people were singing along and/or playing air guitar during Purple Rain? And I've always loved Baby I'm A Star.

===

Doing that back and forth arm-wave just like in the movie, here. *snif*

===

I was lucky enough to see him live on the "Purple Rain" tour and then again a few years later. He is just a flat out *amazing* performer and it was great to see him on stage again. But why, oh why, did they have to have Beyonce up there too?? She brought *nothing* to that performance and was just in the way. I wanted her to just STFU.

===

Yup. There is something special about a person who can not only play a whole band worth of instruments, but play them all well.

===

Prince is a big fan of Beyonce, sadly.

===

By musically interesting, I take it you mean not commerically viable. He's been putting out interesting music on his own label for quite some time now.
His battle with Sony kinda kept him out of the limelight, I guess. He's one of the most talented musicians alive. Too bad the kiddies don't want that.

===

Nope, I meant music that I personally find interesting. I've been a Prince fan since his debut album, long before he became commercially viable, but I haven't heard anything from him in years that I find very compelling. His talent is undeniable as he showed tonight at the Grammys. I just wish he still made music I wanted to listen to. But that's just me bein selfish.

===

I had no idea he was going to perform. What an awesome surprise! I've been listening to Purple Rain and a few other Prince tunes the past few months. I kinda thought that maybe he had stopped performing, but he looked good up
there. I wonder if this means that there will be a new Prince album soon? Anyone know what's up?

===

I had heard there was some surprise, but no idea what -- that was ...purplelicious!

I know I'm putting in the Purple Rain dvd as soon as the Grammys are in. obviously *I'm* ready for some new Prince.

===

I swear to God that I have never seen Prince look or sound better. He could teach performers today how to do it with CLASS. He was awesome!

===

I also thought he looked like he hadn't aged a day in ten years.

Musically, I thought he did show a little more restraint than in the past. I kept waiting for him to just let it rip. He was still good though. Can still hit those high notes.

Damn, now THIS is what I'm talking about. That performance was for the rest of the world. We as fans know what's up, the world just needed to be reminded as well. This just shows that Prince did his job tonight.

YOU GO PRINCE!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

It seems it was a hit with its intended audience i.e casual fans and non-fans.

My wife is a casual fan and thought it was great.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Battle with Warner Bros., not Sony.

My friend, who isnt a Prince (or Beyonce) fan by any means, called me and said that he was "really, really, really, really, really good." I was surprised to hear that as I hadn't seen it yet, and all of the feedback I had read was from the org, and it was mostly negative. But, that's what the org is like. Everyone wants and expects something different, and everyone can't be satisfied. I, myself, enjoyed the performance.

"Non-fan" comments from my girlfriend upon seeing tonight's performance:

"You realize he's a total whore don't you?"
"That's so insulting that he has to perform with her."
"Who is she exactly?"
"Oh brother..."
"Why would he give a performance like that, who could that possibly appeal to?"
"Has he no integrity left?"
