I would like to rate the performance but I can't at the moment. All this negative shit is getting me down to be honest. The Grammy's came on the TV the announcer says welcome to the 46th Grammy Awards and the next thing you hear is the opening chords to Purple Rain. About here the goosebumps took over and I was caught up in the moment. No it wasn't the best rendition of Purple Rain or Let's Go Crazy etc etc but these somgs have to build and for us fans that are used to seeing him perform these songs live know that it takes more than 2 minutes of a song to get it kicking!

What struck me the most was hey Beyonce is nominated for a shit load of awards and there she is pefroming Prince songs with him. Says something donchathank?!!!

My fave bit has to be when he ditched the guitar, Beyonce was singing and he got down and funky and did his own thing dancing in the background.
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

I have to say that I don't feel anything when I hear Purple Rain anymore. Heard it too many times. Maybe if there was a 10-year moratorium.
Other than that, for what it was, it was good.

Geez, I can't wait to see this.
And for all those complaining about all the Purple Rain stuff, think about it. Why else would he be performing on the Grammy's at all? He got one nomination for an album hardly anyone heard of or bought. He could have done a blazin' 5 minute instrumental performance of N.E.W.S. and many of you would have been bitchin' about that.
Anyway, an hour and a half to go. As long as he didn't fall off the stage, I'm a happy camper. lol

Thank you Shygirl. I'm completely convinced that there's nothing Prince can do to satify any of his fans. He could make the funkiest album on the planet and a bunch of his fans will think it's pure garbage. Freakin unbelievable.

worship DAMN GOOD ANSWER !!! the man comes out with one of his ALL TIME CLASSICS and you come to a place like this full of folks that love and support him, and theres TRASH TALKIN' going on ? tell me one thing, WHERE IS THE LOVE ? why dont you enjoy the fact that the man OPENED the grammys - the star that he is - the fact that you have the opportunity to see him as he grows - but most of all, GET OFF HIS JOCK !!! i havent seen any of you out on the grammys as of yet --- have i ? confuse IMHO -- PRINCE YOU ROCK BABY :WOOT:

Prince opens the Grammies ten years after his last hit, on the year of the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain. Who in their right mind wouldn't expect a medley of Purple Rain songs? The fans!

Well, he's been catering to the faithful almost exclusively for years. The Grammy performance was for the rest of the planet. It was a good medley, and no he couldn't have played an 11 minute rendition of Adore.

Before I give the performance an objective rating, I'd like to say that I'm happy that the most unsung artist of our time is getting such wide exposure even though commercially he's dead at the moment. As for the performance, I would give it a 7 maybe. Nothing he did even touched the pristine performance I saw on the Vegas DVD. His voice seemed a little off, and physically, he was restrained as he has been in recent performances. Beyonce did pretty good too, I give he credit, she has presence, good voice and seemed gracious to be working with a master, and understanding what that meant in terms of letting him have his share of the spotlight even though she is the real focal point for the kids. Live performance is always hard. Especially on the voice, and time contraints. That said he did as well as could be expected but I don't get the feeling he really got the crowd off.

The performance was for people who have forgotten about Prince and it succeeded. He wasn't playing to those who own "One Nite Alone Live", or "NEWS"!

I'm sure it was more impressive live.

worst. grammy pic. ev-errr. falloff

as for my ratings, they are as follows:

princey: i give 'im about a 5.5--he'd get a 6, but why oh why with the medley? other n'that, he looked nice tonight (liked the suit, that was sharp!) and he busted out with the hohner in the 2nd lil' segment of the performance (yeeeah!). and omg, did ya'll see 'im sittin in the audience at one point...i forgot who just got done playin but the camera cut towards him and mani at one point...and p looked kinna irked or sumfin. lol

beeyotch-e: -232. yes, i said -232! what in the hell was her major malfunction?? she was oversingin "pr", ya'll--and bogarted the mic at one point, like she forgot who the fuck else was singin along with her and whose song it was! that was kinna disrespectful to me...and what was up with that dress she had on? i guess she had taken the ike turner comment to heart and was tryin to do a tina or sumfin...that shit was not jivin.

performance overall: about a 7.4 or so. extra points for the hohner and for p showin up n'playin. nod

i thought it was the best thing he could have done. re-introduce himself to a wider audience and performing with perhaps todays top pop star. People will be talking about him again, and with the right promotion someone might actually pay attention to his next album.

I'm with you on that one, Dansa. I really enjoyed seeing Prince back in the spotlight, rocking out with a medley of his best tunes. He also looked ad sharp with the purple & gold suit (my favorite colors, by the way). But Beyonce kinda tainted the thing a bit with her presence. But I guess he was doing that to try and gain a younger audience. Also, he might've done that because it was keeping in with the theme of the ceremony. We've seen many collaboratinos between the pop stars of today and the old school legends.

Good point. Prince has always been known for being around and having sexy girls as his protege's and for that, I think it worked for Beyonce to duet with him.

I think this is all a little bit bigger than what we can imagine. Beyonce, regardlass of her strength as an artist is the shit right now. Couple that with the fact that Purple Rain had it's anniversary last year and you kill two birds with one stone. As a Dj, I am constantly picking peoples brains about what they like, what is hot, what is not... Many of the people under 20 that I ask about Prince, don't even know who he is, This awards show opened a lot of doors. Marketing ploy? Maybe... Aside from the performance, this has introduced a lot of "younger" fans of Beyonce to Prince, and this is marketing brilliance in action. I already love Prince as an artist, and the majority of people probably won't realise how significant he really was until he dies. I commend Prince for reducing himself to this level. But you have to admit that from watching the performance that in some superficial way he kinda enjoyed the attention. We can sit on the org forever and try to analyze what we think was good or bad, or proper, or trashy... But I guarantee when Prince lays his head to rest tonight he will be smiling like a chessy cat.

WOW!!!

That was a A+++ Performance!! Sure Beyonce was a little off in a few places in the begining.. BUT for someone who isn't used to the true real engery of playing with the best musican ever...she did great!

as soon as they went to the second set (after purple rain) WOW!! Prince did everything.. he sang great, through in great guitar licks!!! & made her song sound hot!! I love the horns going with the "Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh"In Beyonce's Song... and Prince throwing in a few more sick guitar rips!

then that end Lets Go Crazy Prince just ripped up that last guitar solo!!!

Prince looked amazing too.. the dude looks about 33 years old. His clothes looked cool & his hair had a nice "influence" towards his hair from Purple Rain..but new!

Damn Manni is hot She looks like Vanity actually.

GREAT NIGHT for Prince, NPG & Beyonce. I'd love to hear her do a song with them !

Hmmm. I dont get it. He was great. And as potentialy chessy as this "duet" coulda been, it went off really, really well!

They put this together in less than a week, folks!

I've been a fan since 82, and there are better performances of those songs out there, maybe even from live TV events...but the timing, with the excitement of opening...

He's been out of the mainstream for so long, people, u have to try and see it from a layman's eyes and not from an "ORG" point tof view.

Look up ANXIETY'S review on this or a similar thread. That's what it was like for me. Thrilling. He's back.

People are never gonna be happy, but u think his biggest fans would have apreciated this high=profile, prestigious, on the money performance a little bit more.

A 2, and that's being generous. Anyone defending this performance is totally trippin'.

Everyone's chiming in with this, "Well, for a non-fan..." b.s. My girlfriend is a "non-fan", she came out to watch this performance and afterwards said, "You realize he's a total whore don't you?"

Yes, yes I do.

Now I'll go back to listening to NEWS so I can try to respect the man a little again.
