Seeing Janet's tit on the Superbowl has somehow reminded me of Mayte's topless days on stage. I remember a friend telling me that during European shows Mayte would dance topless on stage. He said he even saw one concert where she wasn't dancing, but rather just walking around topless. I remember later seeing Prince perform on some award show where it was added as part of the act, that Prince would rip Mayte's top off and she would cover her breast with her arms and run off stage. I always thought the way he ripped her top off was quite violent, and even worse I often wondered, how could he exploit his girlfriend/wife like that? How could he pimp the person he loved like a piece of meat. I do feel that the human body is beautiful. And when you have a woman as beautiful as Mayte; you want the whole world to share the pleasure you receive from just looking at her and admiring her. But the bottom line is this was a cheap and sleazy gimmick; just like Janets' performance was at the Superbowl. The only difference was Princes' little stunt was a bit more disturbing; he wasn't just showing off a beautiful woman, he was demeaning his future wife by ripping her clothes off in front of millions of people. (Just my opinion)

Prince's action was a cheap gimmick too, but it was on cable. This was on the public airwaves, which made it even worse.

I don't think Prince was "demeaning" Mayte by ripping her clothes off (if he even did that). I don't see Mayte's body or her showing it as a "demeaning" act. I'm sure she was thrilled to show it off.

True it was probably all Mayte's idea. And don't get me wrong I am totally against what Janet did. She should have really known better. I would expect her to be more responsible and realize that there were children in the audience as well as watching at home. Janets' move was just tacky and beneath her. But there's something about the way Prince ripped off Mayte's top that was disturbing. The whole act of being embarrassed and running off stage just added to it. I don't think anyone thought it was demeaning when he ripped Cat's skirt off in SOTT; but something just didn't look right when he ripped off Maytes' top.

Come on, Prince is Prince. Like any other celeb. (Britney, Madonna, Janet) he would do anything 2 get attention. That's the way show business is sometimes.

yes i remember..especially in Paris 1994 ...she loked like a little girl to me !!! no breast ,... and smiling ...stage diving ...that was kind of a weird situation ...

I happened to be awake (in the UK) and watched the half-time show, I didn't really see the Janet incident, it seemed to cut away at the relevent moment.

What's with all the miming, anyway? I think Kid Rock sang live but that was it - they might as well play a video at half-time.

Or get the players to mime the game so it always has a perfect filmic cliff-hanger cliche ending.

i don't think janet's boob thing was planned... she seemed very embarrassed about it... so it's not her fault

Mayte did take her top off, but it was with her back to the audience and Prince was no where near her. She would then run into the endorphinemachine contraption with her arm across her chest.

At least this happened at the concert I saw - I've never heard of her jumping into the audience with her top off, or Prince ripping it off.

Mind you most of her stage outfits were barely there, sprayed on affairs, and I remember one reviewer in Q mag commenting on it, saying that "it is obvious Prince doesn't hold much truck with underwear. I left the concert knowing that he was circumsised, (as well as Mayte)"

So I guess your original point about parading his future wife on stage holds, even if she wasn't as slutty as you make out.
