BRO915

Rick was the man in the late 70's and early 80's. I loved his stuff back then...PUNK FUNK KING...He was good at what he did(making hard hitting funk hits and mixing it up with some great ballads which finds him laying down some compassionate vocals..hey he has also had a couple of tunes that have been a huge influence on artists...

But clearly, Prince is a musical visionary with loads of creative ideas that has substained him and his career throughout the years...

I think Rick knows that and indeed it is a hard pill for him to swallow...

But both guys have given us some great music...

It's also worth mentioning that Rick 1997 release had some good stuff on it.

This is from an old wall of sound interview. It's not online anymore.

I don't know, man; Prince went crazy for me. I don't really follow him. I think Prince is just making music for Prince. I heard a little bit of what he was up to, and it sounded so contrived, so self-indulgent. When I heard that song "Betcha by Golly Wow" by the Stylistics [covered by Prince on Emancipation], I just fell off the chair laughing that he could do such an atrocious job on such a classic tune.

Let's see; This from a crack addict and ex-con, who married a trailer park queen. I wonder if Prince ever looked at Rick James life and fell off the chair laughing?

Reply to 'Rick James laghs at Prince?'

what does laghs mean?

It means that I messed up and forgot to push U. I got the feeling that you already knew that.

None the less. Fuck Rick James! One song wonder mother fucker! Drugged out wife beating pimp...I can't even believe I took the sec to reply about him..

he was hardly a one hit wonder, dear...

true. nod he has quite a few songs under his belt, but unfortunately his choice in lifestyle overshadowed all of that so folks tend to think he was a one-hit wonder, but he ain't.

he was only known for one song.. "superfreak" and Hammer made it bigger so... to many he only has one song that was decent...

Long before superfreak, there was YOU AND I,and MARY JANE which are far superior songs than superfreak, listen to a good radio station that plays real funk and soul music.

It's not like Prince is such a peach himself. He's an ass too.
And, I thought "Betcha..." was beneath him to do. Not that it's such a terrible song, but he put nothing of himself into it. Just a karaoke, straight imitation.

This was an interesting topic, only because I use to like Rick James, all my older cousins were into him, and if you grew up around my cousins you would be interested in what they were listening to at that age. My comment is when someone remakes a song like what Prince did with betcha by golly WOW.I was always under the impression that when someone remake a song they are not going to make it sound like the original. Everyone puts thier own twist to it whether you like the remake version or the original that is up to the person listening to it. If Rick James fell out of his chair becuase he thought it was horrible that than is opinon, now as for RicK James If I had a nickel for everytime he made a negative comment towards Prince, I would be a Billionaire not (Millonaire). Ricks whole beef with Prince dates back to Vanity (Denise Matthews) Prince stole her from him at the 1982 Grammys after party. To me I think Rick seeing Prince on the Grammys rehashes old memories.

That's just my 2 cents

Basically - Rick James will never ever get over the short time that Prince opened for him back in the eighties on his tour. Prince would smoke the stage every single night and Rick would barely make the show.

I guess that grudge will never end.

of course he can, because his ignorance causes him to confuse the little he knows with what is actually reality.

saying Rick is a one hit wonder would be like some snot nosed prick who has only heard Purple Rain saying that Prince was a one hit wonder.

I wonder why Prince fans always feel like Prince has to be defended by merely degrading other musicians and their accomplishments, instead of commenting on Prince's accomplishments?
