b. regarding others who don't share my enthusiasm for Prince's skill and talent as part of 'the dumb masses' who 'can't think for themselves.'

I would derive no sense of pride in behaving like that.

b. thinking I have to be capable of 'unconditional love' in my capacity as 'a Prince fan'. I know I'm capable of 'unconditional love', but that's not why I continue to like Prince's music, regardless, or in spite of 'his quirks.'

c. thinking that I have to overlook his capacity to write, arrange, record and produce songs which I think are 'not so good' Why should I?

d. believing I must 'not give a shit about the majority's perception.' (Compare that to the compassion and sensitivity alluded to later)

e. thinking I must affirm to myself: "yes, I have what it takes to recognize greatness!"

f. having to be non-judgmental to accept Prince's sexual and spiritual stances. (Of course I can accept his stances whilst still retaining my ability to judge those stances - and, moreover, still retain my interest in his music!)

g. thinking I have to be a compassionate and understanding human being by embracing his often paranoid and defensive attitudes. (Geez - I only buy his CDs and watch him perform in concert - I must be unworthy - how will I live with myself?)

h. believing I must "read between the lines to find in him a man of extreme honor and uncompromising integrity, a man of incredible passion and dedication who cares deeply about growing, creating, and becoming a better human being."

You know, that's my Dad too - that description - he isn't too forthcoming when I visit him, so I have to read between the lines. Admittedly he doesn't write in Princebonics but he's a complex guy.

But I don't give a moment's though as to whether other people think I'm cool or not for visiting my Dad. It's not an issue of pride or having to justify my behaviour to other people (the dumb masses, no doubt) - I just visit my Dad because I want to.

I disagree strongly with what the person starting this thread said, but I wouln't ever go so far as to criticise them as a person. I'm sure you appreciate that debating issues is what these message boards are all about, and despite the shared interest many people have (including myself) in Prince's music, we aren't going to agree on everything.

That's why I contributed to the thread.

Many Prince fans seem to struggle with whether its cool or not to be a Prince fan. I say that only cool people have THE CAPACITY to be his fans today. Here's a few reasons:

1) It often takes a level of sophistication to recognize greatness. This man's music and talent are often overlooked by the dumb masses who can't think or recognize genius for themselves.

2) U gotta be capable of unconditional love to embrace the man with all his quirks.

3) U gotta be able to focus on his good music and ignore the not so good. If u do so, u can pick out lots of great songs from just about any year in the past 25.

4) U gotta not give a shit about the majority's perception and say, "yes, I have what it takes to recognize greatness!".

5) U gotta be patient to often listen several times to his songs before u remove your resistance to the drastic new sound and start digging it.

6) U gotta be non-judgmental to accept his sexual and spiritual stances.

7) U gotta be compassionate and understanding to embrace his often paranoid and defensive attitudes.

8) U gotta be able to read between the lines to find in him a man of extreme honor and uncompromising integrity, a man of incredible passion and dedication who cares deeply about growing, creating, and becoming a better human being.

9) U gotta have the sensitivity to perceive his growth as a person thru all the twists and turns and apparent u-turns. The man lives a rich and intense life full of spiritual growth, experimentation and discovery. He's a real truth-seeker.

10) ...and last but not least, u gotta be funky to love something so funky!

In general, I think you were killing an ant with an M16 by using Hitler to try and make your point. It definitely didn't have the flavor of friendly debate and made your whole post come off totally disrespectful.

You can't tell me that people's choices of entertainment and what they consider art does not say something about them. Get a picture in your mind of someone who can appreciate opera and someone who can appreciate a Monster Truck pull. Barring absolutes and the people that can appreciate both, you can't tell me that that the person who can appreciate (I didn't say like neccessarily) opera isn't just a little more sophisticated, worldly, cultured, something?

I do agree that it doesn't make people dumb if they don't like Prince but you have to be a little more intelligent and open-minded than the average bear to understand/appreciate the genius of his lyrics. My mother threw away my poster of him from the Controversy album where he's in the shower when I was in high school but when she read the lyrics to The Cross she couldn't beleive it was written by Prince. Even she had to admit he might not be all bad. She had no idea cause she couldn't get past the black g-string long enough to give it a chance. I do not care that much for jazz (cause I love lyrics) but I know brilliant music when I hear it.

I am a reluctant Eminem fan. The beginning of Lose Yourself just blows me away but if I was so prejudiced againt rap i general I wouldn't be able to appreciate it. There is such a thing as sophisticated taste and I think that we have it. I think that ANYBODY who only listens to one type of music, no matter what kind it is, is usually limited in other ways as well.

Good post. I understand what u are saying. It seems some of of prince's so called fans have some great desire to compete with him. As large as Prince's ego is there are some are the org who seem to have bigger egos than him. These are the ones who seem to feel prince is there own personal human jukebox who must conform to whatever notion is going on in their heads at any particular moment. Why doesn't he play that song or release that album.

We have some here who feel he's a great genuis and feel priviledged to be able to share in that genuis. And then we have the nitwits that can't move past their own particular prince moment. And berate him for being an actual evolving human being. U can respect a person (prince) without worshipping them or believing they are flawless.

Some here can't even respect prince as a person or an artist. So we get some really nasty posts. I wonder if all great talents of the past had such a hostile fan base? I mean did Picasso have fans who castigated him for moving past his 'blue period'? Or wrapped themselves so much in his life that they were outraged by his actions? I find Prince's life and actions fasinating, but it in no way involves my own. I'm just an interested spectator no more, no less.

But as i have said from time and time again, I am proud to say that i am a Prince Fan 4 Life. And if i ever did loss interest in Prince, I would always respect him because as a human being you have to respect what he does. He is a musical genius and very talented. He is one person that should be acknowledged for every record he has ever made because they all rule. Prince is one artist that i can truly and simply name as a musical genius.

I think that the ONLY reason each and every one of us has to be proud of being a Prince fan is that one true moment. That moment when you feel the butterflies, when you stop what you are doing and time stands still, when you finally get it...whether your listening to an old song, or a brand new one. Doesn't matter about the bootlegs, the live performances, the avatar or the trivia... it's all about that moment. Every experience is ORIGINAL and UNIQUE...
