O(+> CD: yes or no?

I recently started listening to this CD again...

prince is one of my personal favorites, when i first got this CD, I couldn't put it down, I just wanted to hear your opinions...

It's got everything for everyone, it's freaky, funky, and in a way sweet (i.e. sweet baby, blue light, and god created woman, morning papers)

I love it. Following the disappointing Batman, and the even more disappointing Graffiti Bridge, and the even more - and yes, that WAS possible - disappointing Diamonds And Pearls, the symbol album was a relief! It was a pleasant return to form. His first good album since Lovesexy.

You may now thank me for pointing that out. biggrin

No.

Like the energy.

Dislike the subtle anger in the lyrics. You're PRINCE! You kick everyone's ass! Why so angry?

Dislike the regressive immaturity of the lyrics.

He should have been building on the visions and statements of the "Lovesexy" spirituality, or the psychedelic imagery of "Parade".

Instead, he tried to be "1992-Hip", instead of truest to HIMSELF, and ended up looking like a COMPETITOR, not the TRENDSETTER he was.

"Don't look now there's a river of blood/you must have been a virgin" sucks to listen to.

He was above that shit.

Yes. To many a young Prince fan who grew up on Prince in the 90's the prince album was the "1999" of our era. Of course that makes "The Gold Experience" our "Purple Rain". Anyhow, alot of older/wiser fans didn't like/don't like Prince's harder funk, but I did. Yeah I said harder. Which bass rumbles harder "prince" or "The Black Album"?
"New Power slide...."

Parade is an album that was good when it came out but hasn't really stood the test of time to me. I really never listen to it anymore. It's boring, compared to the albums that came immediately before and immediately after. It's sort of like a musical transition that didn't necessarily need to have been made public. biggrin

yes true, i did grow up with the 90's Prince, but I do think that 1999 and Purple Rain are his greatest... his style changes, and that's why i like it

parade didn't do anything for me
and i did like the batman album, but not loved it

oh yes! this was the album that recaptured my attention. after diamonds and pearls, batman and graffiti bridge (which, while including some classics, had too much filler) i loved this record! its still one of my favorites.

Anxiety

For the most part, I love this album up to and including "Damn U" - after that, I get lost in the purple murk and it sounds too idiosynchratic and up the ass of the whole "game boyz" thing. This is when I started to really dislike Prince's whole attitude - it seemed like he wasn't having fun anymore, and he had a whole blank/glib/snide thing going on that was a bit of a buzzkill after Lovesexy and even D&P...but I can't deny that there's a lot on the album that I love.

I first got into Prince with D&P which over time I've grown to love. The prince album was the first album I hung out for, the first one I hassled wrecka stows for. I think it's a good album, but after taking my first listen in a long time I found much of it crass. The mingling of crassness with sweet ballads is jarring, and almost sounds like P was making a joke.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Are you kidding? Parade was a nonstop brilliant album from start to finish. Maybe the end sides weren't that great but the rest was badass. Have you heard Girls and Boys? Among his best ever, How about I wonder you? Clean out your ears and your mind fella.

I've loved prince since the day I got it. The only songs I skip are The Flow and Arrogance. I used to skip 3 Chains Of Gold, now I love it. I still wish that prince was a bigger hit. There were so many great songs on there that should have been hits. Regardless of that, it's still a fantastic album. And wouldn't it be cool to hear him play And God Created Woman or Damn U or Blue Light live again, even My Name is Prince? I'd probably pee in my pants if I heard them live.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

girls & boys isn't a bad song, but i have to seriously be in the mood to listen to it...

This is a GREAT album.

At times it is very immature, and some of it is tacky, but all in all it is a really good album.

When God Created Woman is a masterpiece.
7 is incredible
(BTW it came T-H-I-S close to being the shortest-titled song to reach Billboard's #1 spot - but only reached #2).
Sexy MF is magnificent.

thumbs up!

My vote is "yes"...

P's vocals on Love 2 the 9's are awesome...especially at the end. Dismiss Tony M and vocus on Prince's voice. Awesome.

Sneakin' "Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic" into "The Max" -- very cool.

Album cover sucked ass, though.

nope, one of his worst. Great cover, poor flow to the record, like to hear version without Kirstie , My Name is Prince, 3 Chains of Gold ,The Max. Parade is one of the best, and Graffiti Bridge is vastly underrated, despite some whimsy. Damn U , God Created Woman, and Sweet Baby are classics lost in the mess.

what was his best album of the 90's

i mean, over-all is purple rain without a doubt (with 1999 & dirty mind coming very close behind)... but i mean

i enjoyed prince & The Gold Experience... & D&P

But which was the best out of the 90s?

Great album, so yes. I would've taken off or replaced 3 or 4 of the weaker songs on here, but still it's a fun listen. He was definitely in a different, somewhat angrier mind state back then. But I liked that era. That anger culminated into the Gold Experience which was just an amazing piece of "musical attitude".
