N.E.W.S. and post Emancipation

Hey. Since I am free to speak my mind here (as opposed to NPGMC) I was wondering what you guys thought of Prince's work since Emancipation. Personally I think most of his stuff since then has been way too mediocre. And what was N.E.W.S.!? New age faux jazz elevator music. Did anyone out there actually like N.E.W.S.? Maybe it's just me but that was even worse than Kamasutra. I know a lot of you liked Rainbow Children but I couldn't deal with the religious bullshit. I haven't yet heard Xpectation (in my book it is a borderline bootleg I can't be the only one who can't get a copy!) so I can't offer an opinion on it. Rave, I thought was half of a decent album. When New Power Soul was released I was so disappointed! That's probably my least favourite album. Oh yeah and Crystal Ball and the Truth. Well Crystal Ball was, obviously, a huge disappointment. He screwed us out of a whole disc of outtakes (3 cd's that could have easily fit onto 2). The Truth was ok. I have heard most of the NPGMC stuff and it was awful! No doubt the worst music I ever heard from Prince. I really thought that with the Gold Experience and Emancipation he was finally back but since then he's released nothing but crap. What do you guys think? Am I being too hard on him. I just think that it's sad that the best Prince album of the last eight years was Andre 3000's The Love Below.

well, I, for one, have enjoyed TRC, Xpectation and NEWS. The ONA semi acoustic album I am not so crazy about, though there are a few nice songs in there, especially "Pearls b4 the swine" which I love

and if you think NEWS is elevator music, I wanna get on the same elevators that you do 'cause they are damn funky!

I much prefer Prince's recent output than most of the stuff he released in the mid 90s

Some of his music in the late 90s was mediocre, including NPS and Rave, but Crystal Ball, while not meeting it's full potential, was still a great release, especially with the awesome The Truth attached to it. I think that Prince has really picked up with the advent of the NPGMC. While there was some filler in year one, IMO they were redeemed with some great tracks such as When Will We Be Paid and U Make My Sunshine. I'll speed it up a bit here - I think Rainbow Children, the ONA piano CD, Xpectation and N.E.W.S. are all top stuff and a revival from his mediocre output from the 90s.

So, well, I disagree with you smile
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Since Emancipation the only album I have liked as a whole is The Truth. Some of The Vault & Crystal Ball was okay (but it's old stuff so they don't really qualify). A few tracks from Rave, a few from One Nite Alone, Wasted Kisses from NPS and Beautiful Strange.

Post-Emancipation has surely been the lowest ebb of his career yeah with a few exceptions.

NEWS is nominated for a Grammy. Its a great stretch for any artist that has created a career like Prince. But then, no artist has created a career like Prince. Thats all I need to say.

nod

I know what you mean. I like Xpectation heaps, but there's
just a kind of otherworldly magic about "Osaka/Tokyo", that
makes the whole C-NOTE ep very special for me.

I love it!

Me too! The album was worth the money just for the track "East" alone. And yes, I do mean that.

If N.E.W.S had been relesased by any other artist it would be slagged off to the hilt on the org, as it is extremely bland! FACT

Last great release : TRC

Prior to that: The Gold Experience

The "HIgh" Album would have rocked...as would "The Dream factory"..."Camille"..."Roadhouse garden"...etc...

Rave had quite a bit of bad tracks, but quite a few good ones too. No middle ground there at all. NPS isn't THAT bad, it isn't nearly as bad as Diamonds and Pearls. NEWS and TRC are quite exceptable. Crystal Ball was a bit of a let down, since I've had most of those tracks on boots 10 years prior. Truth is fresh, and Emancipation is 2 good discs and 1 garbage disc. This group of material by any other artist would be amazing, but when put up next to Prince's output from 1980-1990, obviously it doesn't compare. I guess Prince set a standard he himself is having troubles meeting. Who wouldn't though?? His worst period musically was 1991-1994 Diamonds and Pearls, Love Symbol, and Come. Gold got him back on track, and I don't think he has really faltered that badly since. His career has been nothing short of astounding!

I really dig NEWS, I would have dug TRC if it didn't have vocals, musically I enjoyed it, but once he starts jabbering about the Garden of Eden ana all that jazz...I just go blank.

I've been listening to
Madhouse & Prince & Eric Leeds
like crazy lately so I took out
Kamasutra(which I always disliked)
& gave it a spin & I actually liked it now.
I used to think it the majority of it was unlistenable.
Never thought that would happen

I like NEWS a lot. Great jazz-rock fusion. I like TRC a lot too, even the lyrics. I'm anything but a JW, but I find the lyrics far less offensive than the trite nonsense nine out of ten pop performers churn out. At least the guy's singing about something he cares about.
I suppose even with an innovator like Prince, you get lots of fans who just want the OLD innovation. In the 80s, people were offended by Darling Nikki, now people are offended by TRC. Different subject, same narrow-mindedness.

Just my opinion...

My opinion (the short, short version):

Emancipation: Great
The Truth: Great
Karmasutra: (havn't heard it yet!)
New Power Soul: Good enough but not mind blowing
Rave Un2/In2 The Joy Fantastic: Good enough but not mind blowing
2001 Downloads (Chocolate Invastion/High etc): Great
The Rainbow Children: One of his best albums by far
One Nite Alone: Good enough but not mind blowing
Xpectation: Great
NEWS: Good enough but not mind blowing

Havn't been as dissapointed as many fans here, I like his new Jazz tinged direction
