Seems to me there are people who hear the music of what Prince is doing and people who just want him to be the King of Pop, and Prince is so much more... Prince has started to use horns to punctuate to punch out sounds, he also pays tribute to what people like Larry and Maceo have contributed to music.
Why is it that this site becomes full of people hating anyone who has some history and that Prince appreciates?
If Maceo were really old school only why does he have more kids at his shows thatn Prince and why have more people sampled or used him than anyone else...
Why am I even responding to this???

I don't think Prince these days spends much time worrying about appealing to teenagers. I'd hope not anyway.

First, I love horns. Too much horn sound on Prince music? Well, he's human and it's for sure he has made mistakes sometimes.
But when we are talking about this period, about Maceo Parker, Greg Boyer, Eric Leeds, Candy Dulfer, Najee...
For God's sake, they are incredible musicians and everthing they have played on Prince's concert is absolutely magical.

Price, please, keep on playing with them.

the only flaw of the black album was the horns. they were too far in the front. tone them down a bit or make them less prominent, then i could deal with that. take them out, put in some guitar, u've got a perfect black album.

take 93-95 npg, they didn't need any horns and they were 2 funky, off the hook and they were his best band.

horns were used on the exodus album and again it was its only flaw.

turn 2 96 and emancipation. omg omg omfg he ruined that album due 2 "overhorning". joty and gygo were almost ruined. just watch the emancipation launch show. gygo is drowned out by the horns. they are too repetitive, too simple.

cut to recent years. prince now has a hardcore only fanbase. he isn't trying to get his records in the charts. he isn't trying to gain a new generation of fans. ONA was a jazzfest! yes i think the musics good but if he wants 2 succeed this year, ditch maceo and pals

picture this, prince on a commericial comeback. lets face it, no teenager wants 2 see some religious guy preaching on stage in some double brested suit, playing a guitar, with some guys playing REAL instruments

kids are into rap nowadays, trust me. i'm 13, ALL my friends listen to 2pac, dre, snoop, 50 cent. even i do sometimes.

with his current image and music, he aint ever gonna make a comeback.

I like it when Prince is in big-band horns mode. Listen to some of the funk in aftershows from late '93, with solos by Kathy Jensen, Brian Gallagher etc. - some great stuff that I've never heard other bands do.

They play "Prince Funk". They have the sound that Prince would make if he played horns. I love the Hornheads.

The even put out a couple of CDs. Cool stuff.

OMG! I'm sorry, but I have just lost all respect for you as a human being!!! Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss just smoke on that stuff from '86-'90. And then in the 90s the Hornheads/NPG Hornz were the tightest mofo-ing horn section in the world! Check out "Billy Jack Bitch", "Y Should Eye Do That?" and "Groove On". And his horn section now (Maceo, Greg, Candy) have more of an old skool sound but they still are fucking tight as! But then again I'm a trumpet player so I'm biased but still...

Why am I even responding to this???

Good question especially your response is so far off. I am a musician and I understand the context of the new band just fine thanks. The thread topic has to do with the horn players being left at home right? MY opinion is I love the horns but I'd RATHER hear Prince play solos than hearing Maceo doing yet ANOTHER solo. Case in point, one of the most amazing shows I've seen Prince do, and please keep in mind that I've been seeing him since 1983, was the heavy guitar night at the 2002 Celebration. Prince commanded every song, and YES there were solos by all band members but they fit so perfect with the jam that a new level of perfomance was reached that night. So please know someone's point clearer before you assume that my wish is for Prince to be the king of anything okay? I hope you don't take this as more "prince hating" but c'mon get a clue. So in closing, I like Maceo but I think he gets to solo too much, I don't hate Prince or Maceo, but I stay warm at night with my hate for Larry though lol

mmm.. you got a point there. didn't look at it this way so far. can't help not believing you're 13 years old though. i think it depends on whose playing & arranging these horn-parts. true, prince uses horns for decades now, but they don't sound as nasty now as they did back then. they're far more jazzy now. so, yeah, got to admit, a bit less on the horns would,t harm. and yes; the npg 94-95 line-up definitely rocked the world. by the way, can anyone explain why prince stood out on computerdrum programming (1999) and totally missed it in the 90's? or was it that horrible -whats his name- mr. kirk.. sorry , find it hard to pronounce his name. anyone knows what happened to him?

That's why Prince isn't huge anymore...who cares what the "average" person wants...what kind of Prince fan would want to be average, anyway?

I don't have a problem with horns.

But seems like since TRC he's been on a "retro trip" trying to ape sounds from the 70s and earlier, and from reports of Musicology, that doesn't sound too dissimilar.

Well, I'm an "old" fan, and I totally agree with Mash potato kid.

The horns are way overused. Prince seems to go in phases.

Prince used to say he HATED real horns. Then Shiela got him into them and the 1985 to 88 period was then overloaded with horns.

Then P calmed down, and generally used eric for projects and ballards.

We had them pop up in 93-95, then make way for the keyboards again. At the moment he is back in a "horn overload" era again, and I can't wait for it to finish.

He most creative work never involves other musicials, and horns is something he can't do on his own.

Sure it works on something like girls and boys, but am I the really the only one to cringe when we gets the horn section to replace the keyboard line of When doves cry in concert???

I think Prince has become so obsessed with the "real musican" thing, that he has forgotten about "real creativity".

He seems to be on a mission to save old school, rather than invent the new school. His current sound only affirms this backwards trend.

Squirrelmeat, you cant be serious

If he didnt like Horns why do you think he listened to Tower of Power records?

He based NPG Horns on Tower of Power.

In fact all of those people in Hornheadz loved Tower of Power.

Sly Stone had Horns
Earth Wind and Fire had horns
Chaka had Horns
James had horns
Al had Horns

The only reason Prince didn't have horn section because the ish was expensive and he needed to cut corners.

No Prince loved real horns and that quote sounds like a pile of cow dung.

Dont' get me wrong, I think prince can use horns very effectively, I just think he over uses them.

I love sad music like Huey Lewis, who uses the real tower of power to full effect, but Prince simply over does it.

Horns, whether you like them or not, tend to have a retro feel at the moment, and that leads Prince to being old school, and less attractive to commercial radio. They very thing he would like to re-capture.

Prince stated he hated horn (was it the 82 Rolling Stone?, I can't remember). He was a keyboard king.

I think he needs to do two things. Cut back or the horn, and learn how to use the latest keyboards. Even his keyboards are now sounding 70's retro (aka Muse).

New artists are eating his creativity for breakfast.

Just a view! smile

Actually no, you are way off base.

Prince didnt over use Horns. And it's just not Miles it's Tower of Power/its Horny Horns. Miles is distinct but its way more than that when you have a section of horns.

its alot over the years of horn players that are influenced by this sound.

But did the Black album really have alot horns? Besides your statement let's look into the actual tracks

2 nigs? Horns? no
When 2 r in love? no
Bob George No
Cindy C? yes
Rock Hard? yes

So Black album had some horns
SOTT had some horns
LOVESEXY had some horns
Did BATMAN soundtrack have alot of horns? nope
Did Graf Bridge? nope
Diamonds and Pearls-so n so
Symbol album-alot more
Come? Some
Gold Experience? not really
Exodus ? some
Emancipation? Not really
New Power Soul? Some
The Truth?No...
Rainbow Children? Some
Xpectation-some
N.E.W.S.-some

Second of all you never know what kids or who is gonna buy the record with the right song.

This is the same exact thing that made people doubt Dylan and Santana.

And then what happened?

Multi platinum...

There is more to music consuming than 13 year olds.
Look at Norah Jones. Unless u want to argue to me 13 year olds are buying Norah Jones. And that argument will fall flat on it's face

And there are many other examples of who have had considerable success without the teen audience.

Unless u think that was kids buying the record. I'd bet you 10 grand right now no way in heck that of being the case.

P.S. Santana 2 years ago with Michelle Branch "Game of Love"

Its called a smash out of the park. Wasnt as big as Supernatural... the point is it can be done with the right assembling of your project.

That's what I was responding to - your assertion that you know what "kids" listen to, and that Prince has a shot of being in that category (and I don't think that it was mostly kids who were buying the Santana album 5 years ago, either)...I believe that there is no way in HELL that Prince would ever have another hit with a younger audience like that. What's he gonna come out with? Dance Music Soda-pop Romance?
