yes on american wsoman prince was great.
but when he tried to play fast lick on fly away he faild. i think that you can see the clear diffrence in prince playing when he was (is) interested in guitar playing and he practise tehniq. 1980-81-live shows i seen the videos.absolutly great, prince was playing guitar almost non stop, also great playing,he was practising . 1982-he stoped practising(maybe he was too much intersted in drum machine's and synts-on 1999 -record only on lady cab driver you have great guitar playing, his automatic solo was wimpy. on live shows on 1999 tour he almost didn't play guitar, and when he did it was only funky rhythm licks, dez was doing the solos. 1983-1985-he started practising guitar again.he made rock album . from 1985 until the 1988 i think he again lost interes in guitar playing.he was promoting heavily influenced horn j.b.(james brown) type of funk. i think he practised a lot in 1988-you can see it clearly in many 1988 live shows especialy small club show. he was standardly good in the 1989...1992 period,in 1993 maybe because many ppl under the influence of grunge picked up guitars ,so did he,great playing in that period. my highlite of that period-sacrfise of victyor, house of blues undertakers shows, paris aftershow. he was good until 1999 period. but in the year 1999 his guiitar playing was the worst ever. he styarted using some awful guitar distortion(not turbo boss ,some other very very sintetic.) i think that he didn't practise guitar at that period at all.(maybe it was because of some personal problems in life) but from the year 2000 continuing with these days,he improved a lot.he throw in a lot of exotic scales, diffrent tehnics,i think he quite enjoys his guitar playing these days,so does we.

People, this is getting a bit ridiculous! Can you spell "overanalysis"?
I enjoy "Prince Guitar Threads" as much as anyone, but when it gets to the point when posters are trying to determine whether Prince practiced during certain periods in his career - c'mon... And as far as this jazz about Prince playing exotic scales and his playing being more Vai-influenced - I don't see it or hear it. Okay, he's using a whammy bar now and he's playing a Strat, but his playing still consists of blues-rock (read pentatonic) scales and funk riffs. He does his fast ascending runs, like he did on "Shhh" on Hong Kong Rocks. He's also been doing those types of runs during the "Purple Rain" era. Take a look at the "Prince and the Revolution Live" tape. It's all great - was then, is now. Let's just enjoy it For exotic scales, check out Marty Friedman, formerly of Megadeth. He really does some outside stuff. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Its funny, I bet there isn't one person on this site has chops like Prince, so its really amusing to see them all give such a stiff critique of his playing & tone. U guys are funny.

hectim said:[quote]I disagree. If you compare Hendrix and Coltrane for instance, you'll find two innovators with incredible emotion and depth. Still, Coltrane used a far wider range of scales, chords and rhythms. That difference might well be called musical intelligence. But that's not necessarily a good OR a bad thing. Sometimes intelligent playing sounds great, sometimes it sucks. Same goes for less technical/theoretical playing. That's how I think about it...
If you look at it in millions sold, hendrix wins. I understand your point, but theres somthing to be said about the publics ability to pick up on catchy. I dont wanna get into catchy vs. good im simply saying that somtimes simple phrasing can call more souls. Now theres Purple rain catchy, and then theres Dr. Dre catchy, so that argument can also be extended far beyond our galaxy...meh Disclaimer: All sentences resembling insults alive or otherwise, are purely coincedental.
