Darling Nikki Vs Temptation D. Nikki has this build up 2 it that U know he's gonna get fucked in the end-U know this girl is another 'Little Red Corvette' or 'Shockadelica' and she's just in it 4 the lust not the love
Temptation has a feeling of exploration and ultimately salvation. There is not just the lust of D. Nikki-the Lust addiction in Temptation has the power of God 2 contend with Both songs lead us in2 the madness of sexual addiction ( I should know I've been a sex addict since losing my cherry in the bath 2 myself @ 14) but 4 me it has 2 be Temptation-the real threat of eternal damnation in the song reaches out and overshadows the temporary rejection felt in D. Temptation. Definitely.
It appeals on a base level to everyone. **************************************************

These 2 "naughty" rockers could be siblings, IMO.
In both, Prince uses chordal structures that remind me (for some strange reason  ) of weird folk music (possibly british -- if there is such a thing).
DN's chords are just beautiful, a treat. My favorite part of that song (the drumming a close second). But, Temptation has that full-tilt, boiler-room, burlesque feel to it that sends it over the top for me. To me, it's so "over the top," I suspect the first half of it is a tongue-in-cheek joke to music critics. "Y'all call me a bad boy," I imagine prince saying, "so, I'll give y'all a dirty song..." And, P's guitar (from the Hendrix-like intro to his crazy adlibs and beautiful, haunting solo) is just THAT much better... 
Personally, I always felt the song should've rocked out instead of doing that "God" dialogue, which I never really dug too much. | |

Darling Nikki, definitely! Although I admire him for the end-part of Temptation, it's a little bit of an embarrasment to listen to. And I've always found it interesting that he tacked a spiritual message on to the end of each of them, but it's definitely done more interestingly on Darling Nikki. We are the heat and the light in the forest. Without us this is only a place. With us it becomes an adventure. | |
