Prince or Zappa on guitar?

Haters beware: it's another "who's the better guitarist"type thread.
So who's better? And what solo's prove it?

That might be one of the worst examples in this battle of the axes. One only need to play St. Etienne off Jazz From Hell to put that solo to shame. Not that I'm suggesting FZ is better - it's pretty much a draw in my book. Both are supremely talented guitarists/soloists, though FZ probably worked with more complex keys, time signatures and changes than Prince ever has.

I think they're both great.
Zappa's Watermelon In Easter Hay from Joe's Garage is a fine piece of music and one of my favourite's of his. I have to agree with Papabeat that Zappa was definately more versatile.

Watermelon In Easter Hay, Zoot Allures, Peaches, Outside Now, Apostrophe and others speak for themselves.

Not that I don't dig P on guitar, but FZ kills him.

If you like some funky guitar solos that goes on for exactly the right length of time at the right place in a song, then pick Prince. Zappa is a different kettle of fish entirely!

INCA ROADS!

Zappa's most exquisite solo.

But I think Prince and Zappa are a draw.

While Prince is greatly talented, he's not in the same universe as Frank...not even close. Zappa is the most unique, original & innovative artist in the history of the world. The amount of musical inventions he conjured up are infinite. His guitar playing was only one facet of his many monumental talents.

The guitar texture and solo styles Frank created are unmistakably Frank - untouchable & flawless, in terms of technique, originality & innovation. He was utilizing distortion & wah-wah pedal effects to it's full extent, long before anyone heard of Hendrix...

Prince on the other hand, basically just plays standard funk rhythms.

I'm sorry to offend anyone by saying this but:

Anyone who thinks Prince is a better guitar player than FZ, is out of their depth.

I have 2 go with Zappa on this one. Prince seems 2 b repeating himself on his huitar solos quite a lot (listen to concerts) whilst Zappa tended 2 play entirely different solos 4 songs...
listen 2 some of 74 til 78 concerts and just experience a true master at play wink
