The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (Jazz Rendition Jay Leno Show)

I missed this when it initially aired..but was able to download it a couple of nights ago...What a great version of this song. Every Prince fan knows this, but it never ceases to amaze me how he can take his original compositions and totally reinvent them in a live setting...I dig the way he did away with the bridge in this song...and just let the musicians fill in the song with improvisational solos...Dare I say it...this would have been cool if he would have done it like this on the original studio recording of this song for the Sign O The Timesalbum. The arrangement and phrasing is tight on this rendition.

People can fret themselves about him jumping off pianos and doing splits all they want to...but as long as he can reinvent his songs like this...then rest assure his reputation as an elite live performer will be very much secure.

This "MadHouse"version had already been done in '87 (check out Now's The Time). I recognized it when he did it on Leno. He's cleaned it up some.

We weren't ready for that at that time

Excellent points, bro915. i agree.
man don't really have to write anything new, just rearrange old stuff in new ways and he's still set.

I haven't heard this new version of Dorothy Parker but if it's anything like the stuff on the Las Vegas DVD, it's probalby amazing! Prince & Sting are two performers who continue to invent and re-arrange their older material which makes it fresh and keeps it intersting. If more artists did stuff like this, maybe we wouldnt' get tired of them so quickly. yawn

Hey RD...yes, I still live in the same place. That was Dave Holmes from MTV, he still lives across the street. Also, Kool Moe Dee lives on my block, you know he's trying to be a serious actor now. They call this neighborhood the "Black Melrose Place", don't know why. I have something to hook you up with org note me to discuss.

Are these available anywhere RD?

I loved this version he did on leno, I played it over and over. I was so happy when a similar version appeared on It Ain't Over.
Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!
