spring 1997 - summer 1999 Am I going nuts here or did Prince release nothing but
"New Power Soul" during this period? I mean, "The Truth" was recorded and compiled from late 1996 to early 1997. Then "New Power Soul" was released summer 1998 and Rave came autumn 1999. I remember the preceding messages to "Rave" and they clearly stated that Prince had spent a week in a studio and cut a track a day. So the "Rave" tunes were most likely all recorded within a few weeks and then later perhaps flehsed out some more. Anywho. That's -in slim calculation- at least 24 months worth of tunes from which only 11 ended up being released as "New Power Soul". Cuz most tracks released on the npgmc either precede this period or are from the post-Rave era. So in Prince's world that means one hell of a lot of songs that we've never heard about yet. "Madrid 2 Chicago" probably being one of the albums that he put together during that time. Maybe "Y Should I Do That" and a handfull of others were as well. But that's as far as I can come. To cut this rant short. Does anyone know what Prince did during all this time [apart from touring]? Is there any info on this period in Uptown or elsewhere?? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

He did tour a lot didn't he.
I guess between touring, and studying at the altar of Capt. Dorkface - that didn't really leave much time to record anything decent. We did get the War though ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Maybe he was still in mourning over his lost son and didn't feel like doing much in the studio. It's possible that the tragedy could've coloured his work in a way in which he would later regret ever releasing. Although, it could've led to a truly stirring and beautiful album.

i just got the Crystal Ball/Truth set the other day! it finally came in the mail!!
just kidding but, really. i did just buy it the other day. i had been meaning to, but i had heard so many horror stories about ordering it that i decided not to. i like to give Prince the benefit of the doubt, but things just seemed so messed up with it. anyway, i saw it used at a local pawn shop! i haven't had very good access to record stores for the last several years, but i saw it at the pawn shop and snapped it up. i've been listening ever since! I LOVE IT!!! Poom Poom and Da Bang are blowing me away! We are the heat and the light in the forest. Without us this is only a place. With us it becomes an adventure.

The Jam Of The Year Tour. also re-recorded most of his back catalogue during this period too. Initially planning to release 'New Master' versions of all his WB albums, but later decided to just release the best tracks as a 2CD compilation (in the end though it was never released) During This period Prince performed different arranged versions of some of his newly re-recorded older hits. We know he always puts up new arrangements for every tour, and for nearly every song! He's great in doing that. But as i read somewhere, that he stated that a lot of the (by then) upcomming and toperform older material would get a new arrangement different from the Warner Brothers released ones. Thus the way he did his recording of some backcatalogue tracks for a supposed re-release complilation (2CD compilation of his best tracks so far, indeed!). that's all i know. ANd i have some boots of these recordings, and indeed there's something to noticed. But certainly not that different from previous live performances over the years. Prince was a bit dissapinted with the sales of the re-recorded 1999 The Master versions.. He thought it was going to be a big deal with the comming up new millennium feel and the end of a century as sung by him in the "1999" track. So like usual, he dicided to cancel the idea.. got in some personal problems with ie; his mariage, the dead of his child, no direction where to go, getting much ore into bible study with Larry, not much recordsales, some disapointing ticketsales and reviews, money problems, protegee acts that didn't sell very well... etc. at least this is some interesting speculation i got from a article i read by that time. When was also the period that his mother and father died? Wasn't that more orless the same period? i forgot...

So he did his own recording of some backcatalogue tracks for a supposed re-release complilation... ...And i have some boots of these recordings, and indeed there's something to be noticed, but not all that different from the same songs of the previous tours... that's better
