I have a copy of "Mazarati 2" on cd.
It is dreadful. There is no Prince or Brown Mark involvement. It's not even on the Paisley Park" label. There are tracks produced by "Michael Sembello" among other producers. The graphics on the cd cover are second rate It has the bands name. kind of cartoonish. Not in the same style on their Paisley release. It also has a picture of a race car (not a mazarati) on the cover. None of the tracks are even worth mentioning. They all have that weird 80's disco sound. Just thought I'd share this with anyone who wasn't aware that "Mazarati" released a second album

i heard about that. I also remeber reading in a 1986 issue of "rock & soul":prince special, that Brownmark had a female counterpart group called "mercedes" in the works. Guess it didn't happen. All in all Mazarati must of been tight 2 even be considered by Prince. Oh well maybe 1 day they'll release the wyoming utcm show.

At the time this group was formed...someone at Paisley (no, not Price) put the group together. It was a project Prince gave him to make him happy and to thank him for all of his hard work since before Purple Rain. (Don't ask me his name, 'cause I don't remember, it was a long time ago.) But, this is why there wasn't allot of Prince's involvment in it. Yes, it came from Paisley, yes it was P's band members, so it has the P feel, but he didn't do much with it.
Don't know if that help or not. Peace

DavidEye said: Gary MF...I am demanding that you take that Mazarati out and listen to it again. To me,it's as funky as any of The Time's albums.I was hooked on this album back in the summer of '86.
OK David... I'm listening to it right now . I didnt' realize they "sampled" or replayed a piece of The Time's "Cool" during "100 MPH" (or I should say Prince did). Then again, back then I hadn't bought the 1st Time album yet if you can believe that! So I'm up to "She's Just That Kind of Lady" as I write this.. (Actually now I"m up to "Stroke" which is better) I like hearing the Linn LM-1 drum machine... I'm still not "loving it" as McDonald's would say. I mean it's cool... it's nice to hear another protege..etc.. It's just that yeras later, I didn't really remember much about them or the songs even though I listened to them in '85. In contrast, Sheila, The Time, The Family all made an immediate, lasting impression on me as soon as I heard them. I still remember the first time I saw Sheila's video, the first time I played The Time's 1st vinyl etc. And I can't believe you'd say Mazarat are as funky as the Time! Morris and the Boys just have too much personality. And I won't bore you again with my obsession with The Family (though I'm still shocked anyone would prefer Mazarati)... but I respect your opinion! Dang people-not one mention of their work on the classic Kiss...Prince gave them his original demo which was just a bluesy unimpressive song and they worked on it all night non stop and totally reworked it 2 what U hear now. Prince heard it the next morning and dug what they had done and took the song back...From what I've heard-he really should have given them credit for their work and that probably left a bad taste in their mouth...

Well, when Prince reclaimed "Kiss" for his own 'Parade' album,he at least kept Mazarati's background vocal on it But yeah,I bet that they were really pissed off at having to lose a great song like that...lol...

Hey Gary (and everyone else on this thread)...what do you guys think of the song "Suzy"? LOL...those lyrics kinda took me by surprise.
"Girl your voice is real sexy but it sounds just like a man to me"

Brownmark brought the group to Prince's attention, not a staff person at Paisley Park

Uhhh... as Arnold would say: "Wha-choo talkin- 'bout Wishuhvn???" According to most sources like Per Nilsen etc...it was David Z.--(Bobby's brother and Prince's engineer/producer for some Pasiley acts...i.e he worked on THe Family album) who re-worked the song form the acoustic blues number to what we know today. He did the Linn Drum beat, figured out the trick to make the guitar follow the high hat, and did the background vocal arrangement. That's when Prince heard it, took it back, and added the James Brown-ish guitar intro. Apparently Brownmark claims he also did a lot of the re-working too and didnt' get credit (David Z got "co-arranger" credit). But where are ou getting the Klymaxx connection???

"Girl your voice is real sexy but it sounds just like a man to me" David- see that's the thing about Mazarati. I listened to it last night all the way through... and I remember hearing Suzy and those lyrics, and it brought me back to 1985 or '86 and it was like "yeah that's kinda weird" ...it's like I remembered thinking it then but it didn't stay in my mind. Even this morning as you mention it, I can't really hear the song in my head, although I remember those "crying game-ish lyrics" now that you bring it up! I guess back then I just figured it was all this gay-posing type of thing. I forgot (until last night) how in Player's Ball they say "I bet you think, by the way I dress I'm gay". Back then that was very cutting edge ("Am I striaght or am I Gay... Controversy!")... but today with Queer Eye etc. it doesn't seem like much. I never liked Mazarati's look either, at least not on them! . Oh and I also found their unreleased version of Kiss last night... and dude, I'm sorry... but I thought it sucked. Maybe I'm just used to Prince's vocals and the way he phrases and intones stuff...and I also missed the chicken-scratch guitar part (which I think is the best part of the instrumentation... after the Linn of course!). But I think Mazarati would've been better off doing rock. I haven't heard their second album yet. I'm asuming it's less Prince like. S'Aight DavidEye. I still have your back on this one. I know every little nuance on that album. Its GREAT. Istill hold to it being the best non-Prince album to come out of Paisley Park. I'm a lot less fond of the Family album than Mazarati's. I guess in my opinion, Mazarati was a lot more original than the Family project. The orchestrations, lyrics, etc. all sound like another Prince record where he just had someone else sing lead, whereas Mazarati was BROWNMARK's project. He got to show off his skillz and step a little outside of the fold. Mazarati's album is FUNKY. Two thumbs up.

True, Prince did write all of the Family songs (except River Run Dry by Bobby Z)... And it's easy to see how in retrospect one could say it "sounds like all the other stuff." But when it came out, at the time, it was extremely innovative even for Prince.
And I think it's been debated as to how much Brownmark actually contributed to Maz's album. And dont' forget Prince wrote 100 MPH too!

The Klymaxx connection is...Bernadette Cooper produced some of the tracks for Mazarati 2 on Motown records. Surprised to see that no one mentioned Jill Jones on backing vox on Mazarati's Paisley Park album (check your album credits).
