Prince's Religion

Sorry if this has come up already but if Larry Graham got Prince in2 the JW's how come on the Rave DVD Prince says "there is no king but jesus Christ".
I thought JW's don't follow the new testament or recognise Jesus as the son of God... hmmm

jehovah's witnesses follow a peculiar translation of the new testament called the new world translation. they believe that jesus is the son of jehovah/god, but that he himself is not fully god.

What's so strange about that? Many Christians believe that Christ is the son of God.

I don't think Prince is really into religion. Just listen to his lyrics. Into God, Yes.

A lot of all this JW business could be rumours and rumours of rumours. You are doing the right thing, FunnyW--going direct to the source. That is, the lyrics and sleeve notes. People make up all sorts of stories about him. In fact, people make up all sorts of stories about other people. Why? Who the chuff knows. Go straight to the horse's mouth. And in this instance, the horse's mouth is/are the lyrics of Prince. What a magnificient horse.

He has his own way of living. And it is not what we imagine. He is very, very, powerful. Don't try to stop him! He has seen the future.

I think it's pretty clear that Prince follows the teachings
of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Just listen to the lyrics of

I don't think Prince has ever claimed to be of any particular religion, although it is clear that he has constantly been searching for new meaning. Kind of "shopping around" for The Truth.

I think that he's grasped the concept of Rligion = Culture, and that although there are many different cultures, their fundamental philosophies are similar. "...We should champion our similarities not our differences."

What are you talking about? I remember reading a review of the box set on the site and how they were talking about how he had over 50 songs he cant perform. You responded with a No! Like No! It cant be the truth? Do you not want him to be a JW? Who cares?

That's not what I was saying at all. I was saying that JWs don't keep a list of famous people who happen to be JWs. I wasn't denying the fact that Prince is one. Most people know that he is.

Sorry, misunderstanding. My response may have been reactionary because I think some people are making to big of a deal of it. The only thing I dont like is when he change the song lyrics like 23 scriptures in a one night stand. Other than that I dont care. I know a lot of people who took offence to the sex/spiritual hybrid of Lovesexy, So Princes religious views being controversial is nothing new the way I see it. At the same time I dont think he will be a JW for long.

Reality used to be a friend of mine. Listen to PM Dawn. By the sounds of your post, you have been reading some of my writings. I do not necessarily condone this, but if you have been reading me, you will have read what I have said about people who insinuate "insanity" in others.

It's not my opinion you are after. And my sanity is not really for me to decide. You simply want to feel I am nuts. Feel free with your thoughts, sister.

But I'll say this--not insane, just different. A lot of us cannot handle people who do not think the same way as they do.

This famous cliche: "All the world is queer (mad), except me and thee". Do you know what this means? It means if someone thinks differently to us, rather than take the time to listen and try to see where they are coming from, we simply assume that person is not "sane". Not only that, we start mocking. And mockers are cowards. They try to involve others in that mocking.

If sanity is trying to mock Prince. If sanity is not understanding where that powerful force of nature is coming from (check "Melody Cool"). If sanity is sniggering with others and trying to get others in, 'cos we dare not do it on our own. If sanity is trying to get away from the message of loving4oneanother. If sanity is not breaking the mould if we have money. If sanity is not comforting friends when they are down ("Sweet Baby").If sanity is needing others to hold your hand when you put another down ("Push")--ever stop to wonder?. If sanity is not appreciating one of the very few near-absolute truths in this present earth (which is sick atm, let me tell you!), not appreciating his wisdom, not appreciating his hard work in spreading his truth, not appreciating that he has taken shite so many times from so many sources (and we react with anger if someone disses us just ONCE), not appreciating genius. And not understanding that power source then...

quiero estar loco, por favor!

Which lyrics? "Door to door they went..." One line? Don't get me wrong, if he's a JW, that's fine with me. I have issues with that religion, but I have issues with every religion (or rather what we have done with religion) and dogmatic train of thought. God is bigger than religion. So is man, he just does not realise that yet.

The main issues I have with religion are these:

When man takes a religion, distorts its true meaning and uses it to create more power for him or herself. That is a double Menda City.

Since religion is manmade; it's a perversion to begin with.
If someone can find their truth in this, usually is not of my concern unless they start swapping reality for dogma so that they can condemn people for their beliefs, ethnic origin, sexual preference etc, with the fake legitamicy of religious dogma.
The tension between prince-fans and their idol got bigger because they were drawn in by the music and a certain attitude. The music (partially) stayed but the attitude turned a 180°, leaving fans in the dilemma of loving the music of someone whose views they hardly share. With every new album, religious statement or, what seems irational business-music decissions, the fans are once again faced with the question. Hang on or move on.

Everyone has a gift, whether it music, writing, being good
at sports, art, whatever... We are all equal celebrity or not. We are all important in this circle of life. Prince
is a gifted man, whose purpose is to share his music.
Let's not make him into a god.

Not necessarily. Don't make assumptions. Man has the power to create beauty as well. Religion in itself is inocuous. It is what we do with it that can harm. It can also help. But religion is there for man, man is not there for religion. Man is bigger than religion.

If someone can find their truth in this, usually is not of my concern unless they start swapping reality for dogma so that they can condemn people for their beliefs, ethnic origin, sexual preference etc, with the fake legitamicy of religious dogma.
Half agreed. Dogma, like religion, is OK in itself. What harms is the condemnation. By all means have dogma and religion, but do not condemn. Man has no place in doing this.

The tension between prince-fans and their idol got bigger because they were drawn in by the music and a certain attitude.
Yes, you interest me here. Pray continue...

The music (partially) stayed but the attitude turned a 180°, leaving fans in the dilemma of loving the music of someone whose views they hardly share.
We can still love someone even if we do not share their views. It really is not as hard as people think. In fact, we do it all the time. I sometimes like it when someone disagrees with me. But "not sharing views" and "mocking" are two very different people, even though they may look like brother and sister.

With every new album, religious statement or, what seems irational business-music decissions, the fans are once again faced with the question. Hang on or move on.
No they are not. If Prince is a JW, even though I may have issues with how people use that religion, it cannot and does not take away my fundamental appreciation of Prince's talent. And the fact that his music and lyrics, like the Psalms during Babylonian slavery, has helped and soothed me through some difficult times. I cannot take that away from Prince. And I hope I never will. But I also cannot predict the future for sure--anything can happen, as Bob Marley once sung.

So, do not worship Prince, but try to appreciate the meaning of what he stands for, and the meaning of what he is. Let's hear it for the boy!

Thanks Gail. It really is as simple as that. We can all be gods, though. It has been stated twice methinks. So if you don't mind me paraphrasing you: appreciate Prince, but don't make him God.
