Beware The Contract Killers, Claire Hughes, DJmag.

from "Beware The Contract Killers", by Claire Hughes, in DJmag pg.55 Nov 13/2003:

"But it's not all about money. being tied into a deal you are not happy with can stifle your creativity and ultimately, stunt your career. Get in with the wrong label and you could find your creative rhythm stifled. Prince had a big fall out with Warner in the 1990's for this very reason. He felt that the label had control over his master tapes and thereby was controlling the pace at which he could release albums. A label is often going to have more say that the artist about where product is released. It was during this dispute with Warner that Prince ducked out of the limelight and changed his name to an un-pronounceable symbol. To this day the pint-sized, funky popster sells his music independently, via the internet."
