And you beat me to this one... I remember when it seemed like I would be the only one to post about anniversaries like this. I'm glad others are doing it too..

Everybody break out your Madhouse album, and listen to Prince doing something different. Love this album!

IMO it's the best of all Madhouse records.
It's simply beautiful... it's unbelievable the "ensemble" sound of these tracks knowing that P played all instruments (apart those from Eric Leeds).
It was great at that time as it's still great now.

Risking getting flamed and verbally asaulted, I will ask anyway...

What is the Madhouse album all about? Is it all instrumental? Did Prince really play all the instruments? Was it officially released (I never see it in da stores).

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

here's a flame-free response:
madhouse was an anonymous prince sattelite project that released two albums on paisley park records in '87. both were all instrumental. 8, the first one, contained 8 trax titled one through eight; the second, 16, had 8 trax as well, nine through sixteen.
the 2 madhouse albums were issued on LP, cassette and CD. 8 came out in january '87, and 16 in november. 8 was a minor hit - it did chart on the billboard 200 in the US, and 6 was a top 10 hit on the black chart. like many paisley park projects, this one disappeared quickly. it is now nearly impossible to find the CDs, which are out of print, in the shops. if you find them on the marketplace at auctions, they go for big bucks.
at the time of release, no one knew who or what madhouse was, although it was clear that prince was involved. it has since been disclosed that prince played virtually everything on the first album except for horns. there was more group involvement on 16, and that album actually listed musicians involved as eric leeds, dr. fink, levi seacer, jr., and a drummer called john lewis.
musically, madhouse is no to far off from what prince has been doing lately, 2001-04. it's funky jazz instrumentals with heavy emphasis on riffs and repeated melodies.
