Fan urges boycott in 1999 (old letter from the PPML) Hey Dansa...I don't know if you remember the Paisley Park Mailing List, but back in 1999,when Prince sued Uptown, many fans were pissed off. This is an old letter from the PPML.It gives you a sense of how angry many fans became.I'm not gonna print the name of the lady who wrote it (she may not want it re-published...lol).I'm not sure exactly how I feel on this subject, but this letter is interesting. And her letter has some really funny parts too
"Tell Record Stores To Stop" Prince is suing.Like it or not.Deny it all you like.Bitching will only get you so far.You have two choices,do something about it or shut up and bend over. Those of you who really want to stop what Prince is doing to Uptown,Interactive and Prince fans nationwide, can. Those who don't really plan to do anything but whine and/or aid Prince in his crusade against a majority of fans and supporters should just go on and stay his loyal collectives until your ship comes in.(Make sure you're wearing your Nikes for the big day). For those of you who want to do something about the lawsuit: Don't write Paisley Park or NPG Records. Don't call his lawyers.Forget all of that. Show him what you guys are really made of.Get him where it really matters most. His pocket. Tell the RECORD STORES (large chains and small mom and pops) that you will not buy any products that come from NPG Records or any products from Paisley Park enterprises.Tell that you will not buy any Prince music.Take action.Put some power behind your words. I'm aware that this is a huge sacrifice for some of you.It means that you will not buy Roadhouse Garden if released. Many of you may not want to do that. But it is the most effective way to get the desired results.Prince has most of you in his pocket for he feels that many will not turn down Roadhouse. You have to show him that he needs you more than you need him.The quicker this is done, the more you'll drive this point across. And the better chance we all will have at a peaceful relationship with the artist.Prince does not seem to respect his fans. And sometimes when respect is not given,it must be exacted. Organize volunteers from all this fanbase community.Have volunteers representing fans from as many city/states as possible.Appeal to stores through letters, petitions, faxes or emails. It won't take long to get their attention and once everyone stands firm, you will all get results. Now it's up to you. You can walk away and allow Prince's behavior to get worse or you can do something about it.Your call. Peace and God Bless (name witheld) [This message was edited Mon Jan 19 14:19:43 PST 2004 by DavidEye]

That's a great letter, but once again, I disagree with the idea of a boycott. I think any action should be about recognition and acknowlegment - the appreciation of the music shouldn't suffer for it.

I agree.A boycott is a little extreme and it just wouldn't work.Like the letter states "Prince has most of you guys in his pocket".

But that pocket ain't as deep as it used to be, and if he has any plans of ever appealing to a mainstream audience and making that old glory day $$$, it ain't gonna help to have a big chunk of his fanbase coming together to speak out against his shenanigans.
