CREAM.the 1st time you heard it.............

i was discussing this with a mate and to my surprise he agreed with me that that on very first listening (91)it had an almost ballad like quality to it...quite a strange, whispering almost insular piece and THEN...you know it becomes massive, massive video etc and now when i hear it,i still dig it but it holds none of those initial qulalities..just another funky big hit..weird eh?(the same thing with kiss..on 1st listening i swore it was the weirdest thing id ever heard)

That use to be pretty typical for Prince music. On first listen it was almost an assault of sounds. Then after repeated spins the layers started revealing themselves.
I'm firmly planted in denial

I never understood why, of all Prince's songs for people to dig, Cream struck some nerve. I always considered it to have a lifeless tempo, stuck somewhere between ballad and forgettable dirge.

But what do I know?
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

When I first heard it, I knew it was going to be number on the Billboard charts...It had everything a pop song needed to go number #1 on the pop charts. As a matter of fact, this is the last song of his to go to number #1 on the pop charts...

I downloaded this great song as performed on Arsenio Hall Show back in Septemeber of 1991, a couple of nights ago...Man I love that particular LIVE version of this pop gem.

I can't stand this track. I try and remember if I ever liked it, but my long-standing dislike for it gets in the way...

Heard it for the first time on the Arsenio Hall Show back in 1991 right after the MTV Awards.

The next time I heard it was in my car when I was driving back and forth to college classes. I heard various cuts off of Diamonds & Pearls -- like a track an hour. I remember hearing Walk Don't Walk while I was entering the car from a trip at a mall.

For two years straight on Cleveland radio in the early 1990s, one of the radio stations played Diamonds & Pearls and the prince album on a Sunday night showcase. Both albums were released a few days later in the reccord stores. I made it an effort, and still do, to get Prince's release the first day it hits the shops.

Those were the good days --
