HA!

Things go badly wrong from the very first line

I hitched a ride with a crazy horse showgirl

omg

The original goes:

I hitched a ride with a vending machine repairman

So much for Prince claiming that you should not cover
a song. And if you 'must' than don't change it i.e.
'take someone else's kid and give it a haircut and put
it in a new outfit'.

rolleyes

From that shocking openingline, it goes downhill faster
than a breakless carr full of spotty teenagers, rolling
downhill with a whorehouse in sight.

I have never been that wild about the song & Prince's version didn't do much for me either. Since you brought up the subject I'll give it another listen & see if my opinion has changed.
About once a year I listen to Dolphin to see if its improved with age - which it never does.

I thought it was a criminal waste of studio time.

Interesting to observe, however, that the version Sheryl Crow played at the Lilith Fair in 1999 was in fact Prince's arrangement, not hers...

When it was first released, I really liked it. A lot. The end part I didn't care for too much, but I liked the first enough that it carried me through. Now I rarely listen to it. At the time, I wasn't too familiar with the original. Now that I am, and I love it, and Sheryl's gonna be my Baby Momma, I don't like o(+>'s version so much.

It's a shame that it went so overboard in the studio. It was great live.

I think it's one of the most underrated things Prince ever released in the '90s. It's full of the classic funk that he made us groove to in the '80s, just updated for the young teens of today. All the kids in my neighborhood cruise around with that shit blaring in their cars. It drives me insane. At all hours of the night, young kids just cruising around to Prince & Larry getting 2 fonky 4 U!

I also like the kazoo-synth from Girls n Boys that comes in near the coda

It's shit.

Compare this to innovative stuff he was doing between 82-88.

It's llike he's on funk cruise control.

Shit, compare it to some of the stuff on "Rave" and it's shit! It's the worst song on an already sketchy (not terrible) album. It's certaintly the worst cover I've ever heard him do and I'm not very fond of his covers. One music review described it as a disco verison and while that seems true...poor disco! First Ethel Merman and now this! Certaintly one of the most dissapointing upbeat tracks he's ever done.

I dont hate it as much as you guys. It's ok but probably should never made its way onto an official release.

I really liked his version of One of Us though. Way better than the original which I never liked.

I like it - good energy and very positive.
Different from the rest of the album, but can't see why that's so bad.
Yeah, it's different fromt he rest of the songs on the album, but then I appreciate the "difference".
Variety is cool and I'm all for positivity.
Puts me in a good mood anyway...

cool I did not care for it when i first heard it. Then after hearing it several more times i thought it was not that bad after all. The original version is much better. Leave it to Prince to cover another song & change the whole damn sound. music

I think it's awesome when an artist covers a more current song and offers a different take on it. Jimi Hendrix used to cover current tunes in his live sets all the time! i think it would have been much cooler for Prince to do the tune live and offer it up as an official boot or something like that but it's cool and different (but yeah, they shoulda left Larry at home that day. Larry's a man who should play but not speak.)

Funny you should say that I managed to get hold of an alternate version of Rave where Beautiful Strange did replace Everyday Is A Winding Road hmmm wink

This wimp is right, it's all about Rave In2 these days.

You really need to release some of that aggression Hobbes...
