That whole "Rude Boy" thing...... ...It had to have come from the 2-Tone ska culture. Prince was sporting that button around the same time of the British ska explosion. Maybe he was fan of them bands like Madness & The Specials and stuff. Or I guess he thought it was just a fashionable thing and was just apart of his Punk/New Wave phase. I hear punk/new wave influences in Prince's very early stuff..but I doubt he even knows what ska is. Still, he might be a closet fan..

"Rude Boy" is what Larry calls Prince if he doesn't swallow. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

I think it had more to do with the fact that at that time he most likely related to the Rudeboy ethos, and the iconoclastic nature it represented. Prince was just as much a sort of Rudeboy of American music, most of which couldn't be categorized. Although it was during the punk and new wave emergence, and in turn the ermergence of British ska, ska has its origins in Jamaica, as a precusor to Reggae. This post not for the wimp contingent. Agreed. His music was sexual and controversial..RudeBoy encapsulates all Prince used to be.

So I guess the question now would be, was Prince sporting the whole "Rude Boy" button and image because it reflected his attitude and image, or was he just an advocate of a fashion trend derived from the 2-Tone era? I would have though it was the opposite. I just can't picture prince shakin' his dandruff to Bad Manners, and I haven't seen him use any other iconicry or fashion from the ska era. I bet he just saw the rudeboy button at a market and thought 'That is sooo me!' (whilst revising the lyrics to 'Sister' in his head). Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Who the heck is this "Larry" I keep hearing these funny comments about? ...larry graham[/quote] Larry Graham...justifiably respected famous bassist for his great work in the groups 'Graham Central Station' & 'Sly & The Family Stone'...but more imfamously known of late as 'big brother Larry' for be-friending Prince and probably the one responsible for leading 'little brother' Prince down the 'no more cursing, your old stuff is evil, everything is evil, everybody else is wrong, aint no room to disagree, holyer than thou' road... look... I'm all for folks believing whatever they want to believe...i really dont give a crap what religion prince worships...but to deny or attempt to clean up or supress the old music that he once created...and that in a way created him...the same music that Prince used to call 'his children'..to try to do some revisionist thing and in a way deny or minimize some of it...well thats another thing entirely...thats messin with the music...thats gettin in the way of MY old school jamming dammit! anyway thats who this 'larry' you keep hearing about is...look for the dude in the BIG white hat... Prince has been into Fishbone since waaay back. Dirty Mind got airplay around here at the same time that The Specials did. It's in his roots. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
