Why it's futile to critique Prince music

and most art.

It's futile because "New Power Soul" makes me feel like "Sign O' the Times" makes you feel.

In other words how are you gonna say my strawberry ice cream is worse than your chocolate.

I dig "New Power Soul" a lot. If you don't, I understand, but I feel bad for you.
"New Power slide...."

As long as they don't fix me a plate, I say to each their own.

Do you mean no-one should ever express their opinions or feelings about a Prince record because it might clash or encroach on someone else's?

Blimey, might as well close the whole forum! falloff

Probably the only good it does is to get the "critique" off your chest.
I'm firmly planted in denial

"Do you mean no-one should ever express their opinions or feelings about a Prince record because it might clash or encroach on someone else's?"

No I am simply saying it is a waste of time because there is no way to truely prove that, for example, "Sign O' the Times" is better than "New Power Soul."

No, there is no scientific method for proving one piece of music to be better than another. But public opinion generally holds court. Specifically when that public is geared entirely towards the said performer of the music in question. (The Orgers)

And where that court is concerned, NPS is garbage.

Could B the simple fact, not opinion that some people do go overboard here 2 feel there the real genius when it comes 2 the mans craft & creations as if they know whats better then he.

That type of judging around here is ill and not a healthy "opinion". I don't like all the music Prince has made but I'm not going 2 sit here and act like I know whats best 4 him.

So U can say I'm not a follower like U thought or a ass kisser Mr. Romance...but I like 2 call it fair and without intruding into areas I need not B.

By knowing my place I can't expect others 2 follow...But I'll let overs hide behind there over-cooked opinions.

Well, there's no way to technically "prove" that one album is better than another, but I see nothing wrong with having an opinion of an artist's work.If nobody could critique Prince's music, you'd have to shut down this entire forum...lol...

Yeah I agree with that...2 discuss things in a open forum thats realistic and fair. And U express things in a way thats done correct with common sense, leaving the tabloidish stuff in the trash. We should feel a sense of being accountable 4 what we say here... And I'm not saying B blinded by the purple faith as I'm talking 2 those who call yourselfs critiquing another mans art while throwing darts...that have nothing 2 do with truly breaking something down proper and sounding like U know what your talking about regarding his or anyones music.

Y'all know who U R*

Violator-

The court of public opinion huh? Like the general concensus among 14 year old girls that Ms. Aguilera has the best voice in music? Or the court of public opinion in Nazi Germany in the late 30's? Nice system. Mob rule and all.All I am saying is that you may hate "New Power Soul", but to me it was as good a "Sign O' the Times" regardless of what you, your court, or Rolling Stone magazine says.

Christina Aguilera? I think you're consulting the wrong court. You know as well as I do that in 5 years nobody will give two shits about Christina Aguilera as it was with Debbie Gibson, Tiffany and every other clone in between.

Is it 'futile' to critique everybody's music or does this standard just apply to Prince? Look, you're entitled to like whatever you will. I've always asserted that Prince could release a recorded fart and a fair percentage of folks will buy it. To each his own. But understand this, when Prince accepts his nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame this year, it will be on the strength of recordings like 'Dirty Mind', '1999', 'Purple Rain' and 'Sign O' The Times', not 'New Power Soul'. And I'm sure Prince is thankful that 'critique' exists to distinguish them.
