Should I buy Controversy? I like Dirty Mind (despite the rather dated sound and falsetto singing), and I'm thinking of getting Controversy. I was wondering how the good people of the org rate this album.

Loses a star for Ronnie, Talk To Russia. The rest is essential IMO, especially tracks 1,2,3 and 6.

If you like anything from '89 on then 'Controversy' will blow your mind...

you should have Controversy before you have any Prince album/cd "Climb in my fur."

If you like Dirty Mind, you'll like Controversy. Not more of the same, per se, more like the bridge in between DM and 1999.

It's not his best, but Jack U Off is worth it for a laugh and Annie Christian is rather wonderful.

Yawn, so R U saying that Dirty Minds a let down cuz despite it coming out in 1980 & being a "rather dated sound & falsetto" as U put it...U expect it 2 sound like the stuff U would hear on todays radio?? Ask yourself if your even being realistic with such a quote? Should U buy Controversy U ask?...maybe not~ Seeing its a solid matching follow-up 2 that other dated album...U just might not get it either.

I dunno, Controversy's title track is still fresh as a daisy to my ears. It made top5 in '93 in the UK twelve years after it was released, not bad that. Much as i love DM, i couldn't see anything on it doing that. . [This message was edited Sun Jan 11 14:15:34 PST 2004 by Marrk]

There is a very definite camp-sensibility which runs through the album's lyrics. If Prince's albums were movies, this would have been directed by John Waters.
Oh... Some of Prince's albums were movies - but you know what I mean.

Dirty Mind was released in 1980, and it shows its age. Compare how it has dated with, say, Back in Black by AC/DC or Women and Children First by Van Halen, which both sound superb and were released in 1980 (although they're very different styles of music). Failing that, what about the production on Off the Wall (1979) or Thriller (admittedly 1982)? I think Dirty Mind sounds dated more because it was recorded in Prince's basement (or so I have read) than because it's 24 years old. I have no problem with "old" music.
I've just listened to the 12-inch eight minute version of Lets Work and its great; how does the album version compare?

Ok cool, I say if U have Dirty Mind 2 have Controvery would seem 2 B a natural.
"Lets Work" on the albums tight but the longer versions much tighter.

Look, it's a fucking Prince album and a damn good one at that. Go buy it. If you go to a 2nd hand record shop or e-bay, you can get it for chump change. "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"
